The US men’s curling team laughed off a mix-up at the Winter Olympics as they were handed the wrong medals after winning gold.

John Shuster and the US team swept to victory after beating Sweden 10-7 at the Pyeongchang games in the final on Saturday.

But the team, who secured the country’s first ever curling gold medal, managed to see the funny side after they were handed the wrong medals at the medal ceremony later on.

After the ceremony, they checked their bounty and realised that they had been given the gold medals for women’s curling.

Taking it in their stride, they laughed it off at the press conference with Shuster saying: “It wasn’t a big deal, I promise.".

The mix-up has since been corrected and the team handed the correct medals.

NPR correspondent tweeted: “Hmm. It appear the US men’s curling team was presented with the women’s medal. There’s some confusion. But hey, who’s complaining? They’re gold!”
