Wombat Women Cricketers enjoyed a successful year in 2023 winning the league cup and now all set for the start of the new season.

Whilst the team was successful last year, Lorraine Warren, who is one of the driving forces behind the Wombats Women’s team, who play their home matches at Bishops Lydeards (TA4 3HR) former ground, is looking to build upon that success.

She said: "We won the league last year in our first season which was great and currently we have about 15 who are regularly playing, but of course they are not always available so we are looking to increase our numbers.

"Anyone who would like to come along and join us would be more than welcome.

"We meet on a Monday evening up at the Wombats ground, and the matches are usually on a Sunday and then we have cup matches and friendlies mid-week.

"Among those who play we have got a big spread of ages from 14 to 60".

Warren continued: "None of the women who play with the Wombats had never played before so we helped them to learn the game.

"These are people who have started from scratch so we have taught them all the skills from the start.

"We play with both the hard ball and soft ball.

"Anybody who comes along would be made very welcome and on a summers evening coming along to play cricket at the Wombats is a lovely place to be."

Wombats Women have got a big festival coming up August 11 which is being sponsored by Higos Whand, which the Somerset Cricket Foundation are helping to organise.
