Liverpool has always been a club that's operated smartly in the transfer market. The Reds don't make statement signings just for the sake of fan appeasement. FSG runs Liverpool in a streamlined fashion and never overspends, therefore the club tends to get many more signings right than wrong.

Of course, the club splashes the cash when needed, but Liverpool also looks for potential opportunities when they present themselves. Take for example the signing of Thiago Alcântara in 2020, or Wataru Endō last summer. These were deals done relatively cheaply and proved to be smart (even if Thiago's move wasn't what most expected, he still sparkled when fit).

Liverpool, via Spanish outlet AS, has previously been linked with what could be a repeat of the move it made for Thiago by going after another Bayern Munich in midfielder Joshua Kimmich. The German has been a mainstay of the Bayern midfield for years now, but the 29-year-old has been made surplus to requirements, according to Sky Germany, and he could be one of six players set to leave this summer.

Bayern lost out on the Bundesliga title for the first time since Jürgen Klopp was Borussia Dortmund coach, and the club could be set for a revolution amid the shock of winning nothing in 2023/24. Thomas Tuchel was sacked as coach and in addition to Kimmich, the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Noussair Mazraoui could also make way before the end of the summer.

From a Liverpool perspective, Kimmich is arguably the most intriguing player of the bunch. With the player just having a year left on his current deal, Liverpool could sign him for low cost. Moreover, his versatility means he would be a perfect option for new coach Arne Slot, considering he's capable of playing both in midfield and at right-back.

His experience would also be highly beneficial to the Reds, in what is a very young midfield that hasn't won many major trophies at club level. With Thiago set to leave this summer, Kimmich could take his place in midfield, and thus replacing one former Bayern midfielder for another. Kimmich had been hailed by former Bayern coach Julian Naglesmann as 'world-class' in 2022.

This is the kind of market opportunity Liverpool has done well in in the past, so making a move for Kimmich makes some sense in that regard. The club had been linked with a move for Kimmich back in January by Spanish source AS, and despite the departure of Klopp, links to Kimmich continue.

Liverpool.com says: Kimmich would be a no-brainer of a signing, especially if the transfer fee was relatively low. His experience is vast and would be useful for Liverpool, and his ability to play in multiple positions would also be an added bonus for Arne Slot, with the Reds in four competitions next season. The only stumbling block might be his salary.
