The group stage of the Qatar World Cup is over and 16 teams progressed to the knockouts. They were Netherlands, Senegal, England, USA, Argentina, Poland, France, Australia, Morocco, Croatia, Japan, Spain, Brazil, Switzerland, Portugal and South Korea.
The 22nd edition of the quadrennial tournament, which began way back in 1930, is also the first to be held in an Arab country. The State of Qatar is the smallest country in size (11,600 km2) and population (2.7 million) ever to host.
This format will be changed for the World Cup 2026 when the tournament will be expanded to 48 teams as the USA, Mexico and Canada co-host.

Today's match predictions
By Jason Burt in Doha
France 3 Poland 0: Poland’s biggest hope is not Robert Lewandowski but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Even then it would be a major surprise if they are not comfortably beaten by France who were able to rest players for last their group game.
England 2 Senegal 0: The African champions may be without Sadio Mane but they are well-organised and dangerous and will want to keep it tight. It well be a case of whether England can break them down and that may require patience – which they have shown before in knock-out games under Gareth Southgate.
