World Series 2022: Philadelphia icon Wawa told fans to take a bite for every Phillies hit before no-hitter
The Philadelphia Phillies had the mother of all nights to forget in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series on Wednesday, but the local sandwich chain Wawa somehow took an even bigger L.
As the Phillies headed into the game on a high note, thanks to a 2-1 lead after a blowout Game 3 win, the Wawa social team posted a perfectly innocuous tweet:
Each time they get a hit, take a bite of your hoagie! #Schwarberfest
— Wawa (@Wawa) November 2, 2022
Considering the Phillies opened Game 3 with three homers in two innings, you would have thought their fans would not have to wait long to dig into their hoagies.
And then Christian Javier took the mound.
Over the next three hours and 25 minutes, the Phillies went a combined 0-for-27 with three walks as Astros pitches — led by Javier's six impressive innings — combined to post the second no-hitter in World Series history after Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956.
After Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly each contributed a scoreless inning, as hoagies across the city went uneaten. The final result, a World Series tied at 2-2, an ugly place in history for the Phillies (who had already been victimized by a combined no-hitter during the regular season) and a metric ton of tweets mocking Wawa.
The chain was at least nice enough to keep the tweet up when thousands of other accounts started clowning it:
