Why is Jordin Sparks singing the national anthem?
Jordin Sparks was the victor of American Idol Season 6 in 2007. She was 17 years old at the time, making her the youngest winner of American Idol to this day. She is also an Arizona native, having spent most of her childhood in Phoenix.
Sparks has already sung the national anthem on many of sport's biggest stages. She sang the anthem prior to Game 4 of the 2017 NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Sparks also performed the national anthem ahead of Super Bowl XLII between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, which was held in Arizona. To round out the big four American sports, Sparks also sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" prior to puck drop at the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series in 2014 in Dodger Stadium. In a sense, that covers both hockey and baseball.
Sparks' father is Phillippi Sparks, who spent nine years as an NFL cornerback for the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys.
Randy Johnson will throw Game 3 first pitch:
The Big Unit, and the inspiration behind 2023's hottest couples' costume, will also be in attendance for the first-pitch.
Johnson was a left-handed pitcher and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. Johnson spent eight of his 22 MLB seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, including the 2001 season where Johnson, alongside teammate Curt Schilling. The two were honored with a World Series co-MVP after his team took down the New York Yankees with a walk-off win in Game 7.
Johnson is a five-time Cy Young Award winner, ten-time All-Star, nine-time league strikeout king, and even won the illusive pitching Triple Crown in 2002 after leading the National League in wins (24), ERA (2.32), and strikeouts (334).
Since retiring from baseball, Johnson has found success as a sports photographer.
Who will perform the national anthem for Game 4?
Game 4's anthem singer will be Arlington, Texas native Mickey Guyton. Guyton made history in 2022 when she became the first African-American artist to earn a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. Guyton performed that national anthem at the Super Bowl in 2022 as well.
