WWE Summer Slam 2015: Bout-by-bout preview and predictions

WWE Summer Slam 2015: Bout-by-bout preview and predictions

People are going to need more that silver-tongued Jon Stewart to guide them through the four-hour slugfest that is WWE SummerSlam this weekend.

The Daily Show stalwart celebrates his recent retirement by acting as host for the WWE's traditional summer ball, which has been extended by an hour to cram in a bulging card of matchups and title showdowns.

So to help you separate the world champs from the king chumps, here is Yahoo Sport's exclusive preview and predictions for the 28th WWE SummerSlam in Brooklyn on Sunday from WWE expert Big Jim Munro.

WWE Tag Team Championship: The Prime Time Players (holders) v The New Day v Los Matadores v The Lucha Dragons.

An immense Fatal 4-Way match is in store, with the main threat to champs Titus O'Neil and Darren Young (The Prime Time Players) being previous title holders The New Day. Their three-man rotational squad of Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods have done an excellent job irritating the hell out of WWE audiences with their clapping and chanting routine. But they've got the moves too and could give the champs the runaround.

Prediction: New Day to rock and reclaim the Tag Team title.

Ryback is back from injury but should have too much for Miz

WWE Intercontinental Championship: Ryback (holder) v Big Show v The Miz.

Ryback has recovered from a knee injury and should enjoy making his first major pay-per-view title defence in this Triple Threat Match. In truth, the only real threat is 7ft tall challenger The Big Show, who will keep the champ busy while The Miz will do his best to avoid getting caught in the middle.

Prediction: Ryback to pin an off-guard Miz to retain the title.
Cesaro v Kevin Owens.

This has the potential to be one of the bouts of the evening, as it brings together two powerhouse graduates from the WWE's developmental branch NXT. Cesaro has the most big fight experience under the WWE banner but former NXT champ Owens has demonstrated impressive strength and agility  during this year's feud with John Cena. It could be brutal.

Prediction: Owens to find his feet again after his recent defeat by Cena.

Dolph Ziggler v Rusev

This will be more about the action and distraction going on outside the ring, featuring the blonde bombshells Lana, now in Ziggy's camp, and Summer Rae, Lana's replacement at Rusev's side. If the boys can keep their eyes on the task at hand, Rusev will be hoping his brute force can fend off the Zig Zag to claim victory.

Prediction: If we get a clean result, Rusev to clip Ziggler's wings.
Team Bella v Team BAD v PCB

The Diva's division has received a welcome shot in the arm with the recent arrivals of Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Charlotte. But after an age of individual match-ups, it's taking time for the WWE Universe to get their heads round which girls are in which gang. This Triple Threat Elimination Tag Team match is another attempt at establishing where alliances lie.

Prediction: It's almost toss of the coin territory between Team BAD and PCB. I'll make the Bad call.

Stephen Amell & Neville v Stardust & King Barrett

The star of TV's Arrow, Stephen Amell, joins the man that gravity forgot, Neville, in a curious Tag Team rumble. Amell has been given his chance in the squared circle after being provoked on social media and at ringside by the eccentric Stardust. All this makes Britain's usually outspoken and controversial character King Barrett seem positively normal.

Prediction: Neville to be a flying success, utilising his Red Arrow to down Stardust.

Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper v Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns

Another Tag Team match, this is more like a class of 2014 reunion with two thirds of the Wyatt Family going toe to toe with two former members of The Shield. Ambrose and Reigns have always worked well together and it's good to see them reunited, especially as Reigns has seemed a little lost since losing his big world title chance in controversial circumstances at WrestleMania XXXI.

Prediction: Roman treads the road to glory with Ambrose lending his snarling support.

Roman Reigns should be too strong along with Dean Ambrose

Winner Takes All: John Cena (WWE United States Champion) v Seth Rollins (WWE World Heavyweight Champion).

On any other day or indeed PPV this coming together of two champions would be the headline event. Just four weeks ago Rollins broke Cena's nose on Monday Night RAW after ramming a knee into his opponent's face. Despite his injury, Cena's "Never Give Up" mantra somehow steered him to victory that night. The build up to this winner takes all showdown has seen Cena unveil newly-branded merchandise which makes a big play of the fact he's a 15-time world champion. A win here would not only see him tie Ric Flair's long-established record of 16 titles, it would make all his new merchandise immediately redundant. Food for thought.

Prediction: No matter how well Cena performs, Rollins will somehow escape his clutches. There could be a role for Jon Stewart here. Earlier this year Rollins was a surprise visitor to the Daily Show set, responding to being called out by Stewart over social media. That rivalry has the potential to hijack this match.

Main Event: The Undertaker v Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman)

The Phenom seeks revenge from The Beast Brock Lesnar for a brutal defeat at WrestleMania XXX which ended the most famous streak in WWE history (Taker's 21-match unbeaten run at the showpiece event). But Lesnar has his own score to settle after The Undertaker interrupted a title match with Seth Rollins at Battleground this year, a match which Lesnar was winning hands down. The drama will be intense, the battle will be harshly physical and the showmanship will be provided by the ringside antics of the Bard of the Bruisers, Paul Heyman. But when the final bell tolls, there can be only one winner.

Prediction: Sixteen months on from a defeat that shook the WWE Universe to its core, it is time for Taker to restore some balance. There may be some outside influence but defeat for the Deadman is not an option, otherwise why bring him back out of his box in the first place?
