Wycombe Wanderers made it six games unbeaten as they drew 1-1 away against relegation-threatened Cambridge United.

The Chairboys went into the contest off the back of three consecutive away wins in the division, making them one of the in-form teams in the league.

Wanderers looked threatening with Garath McCleary, Freddie Potts and Josh Scowen pulling the strings, but it was Nigel Lonwijk who almost put Wycombe ahead on nine minutes, as he headed a Kieran Sadlier corner onto the crossbar.

Moments before, Sam Vokes had fired wide for the Chairboys on the volley.

It was an array of Wycombe attacks as Cambridge looked nervous – the Us knew that a win against Wanderers would all but keep them in League One for a third straight season.

However, news that Cheltenham Town, who are also fighting for their lives, took a 2-0 goal lead against play-off pushing Peterborough United, meant some jitters began to sink into the United players.

Jason McCarthy was denied by Will Mannion in the Cambridge goal, with the latter also stopping Chris Forino’s header.

Sadlier hit the post with a long-range attempt whilst Scowen also went close.

For the Us, their best chances fell to Gassan Ahadme, as he headed wide on two occasions.

Both his attempts were assisted by James Brophy.

Elias Kachunga headed wide, whilst ex-Chairboy Sullay Kaikai also tried his luck but to no avail.

Wycombe had a strong shout for a penalty in the early stages of the second period when Sam Vokes was pulled down by James Gibbons, but referee Will Finnie waved away the protests.

Scowen and Sadlier tried their luck in the early stages with Matt Butcher being denied by Mannion.

But it was the hosts who got the game’s opening goal, as Ahadme’s bullet header beat Franco Ravizzoli for pace before crashing the underside of the crossbar.

The Abbey Stadium went crazy as it seemed they had avoided relegation back into League One.

However, with nine minutes remaining, ex-Wycombe striker Lyle Taylor clipped Lonwijk in the box and Wanderers were given a spot-kick.

Up stepped Luke Leahy who converted from 12-yards with his 11th of the season.

The result means Wycombe can finish the season between 10th and 14th in the table.

They host Charlton Athletic at Adams Park in the curtain closer on April 27, bringing an end to four consecutive away games where they managed to pick up a brilliant 10 points from 12 available.

Attendance: 6,081 (271 away).
