Xavi has denied ever telling The Sun he thinks Pep Guardiola would be interested in signing Dele Alli from Tottenham – because he’s actually never had any contact with the newspaper.

The Sun carried what it claimed was an ‘exclusive’ with former Barcelona and Spain star Xavi which claimed the World Cup winner said: ‘I speak with Pep, and I know he thinks it is important to sign English players.

‘At the moment the best English player there is and also one of the best in Europe is Dele Alli. We are looking at a very special player.

‘Technically he is the sort of player that Pep likes, the sort of player that suits the style of game that Pep likes his teams to play.’

The comments sparked a response from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino who joked Xavi ‘hated him’ and the player was his now his ‘enemy’.

But it emerged on Wednesday that Xavi did not give an interview – exclusive or otherwise – to The Sun as he has NEVER spoken to them.

He told Spanish newspaper Sport that he “never” spoke to the publication, and “neither” has he ever publicly discussed Alli.

It is the latest controversy involving the UK’s top-selling daily newspaper. Two weeks ago Everton banned the paper from their training ground and Goodison Park after Sun columnist’s Kevin MacKenzie controversial article on Ross Barkley.
