DODGING BULLETS (Exeter 2.20) is giving away plenty of weight to his seven rivals in the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup, which is the feature race on a day otherwise bereft of quality racing. Paul Nicholls has won this race five times in the past and relies this time on the former champion chaser. This will be his seasonal debut, having finished third to Sprinter Sacre in the Grade 1 Celebration Chase at Sandown when last seen in April. Despite his hefty weight, the eight-year-old has gone well when fresh in the past and there is no reason to think he won’t do so again. Hopefully he can put last season behind him, when he had a troubled preparation in defence of his title and ran only three times without success.
JAN DE HEEM (Redcar 3.40) gets the nod to land the 1m6f handicap, a trip which none of the 12 runners have ever scored over. However, the selection, trained by Tina Jackson, has run well over a similar trip at Catterick on his last two runs, and was just touched off by Miss Tree in a similar class last time. Though a 3lb rise does not help, the selection appears to have benefitted from a step up in trip and with plenty of his rivals seemingly struggling for from, he has enough in his favour to warrant selection.
NONNO GIULIO (Redcar 1.40) has been largely consistent this summer, winning twice and running some fair races in defeat, albeit at a relatively lowly level. Having scored here in a 7f apprentices’ handicap last month, he was a little unlucky to follow up in a 1m seller at this track, which he appears to favour. Though out of his depth in a couple of big field handicaps at York and Nottingham subsequently, Roger Fell drops the five-year-old gelding back into selling company again and he should not be far away in this 1m affair if handling the good to soft ground.
LIFE ON MARS (Wolverhampton 2.00) is dropped in grade to a Class 6 nursery, having been sent off favourite for a Class 5 event at Yarmouth last time and finishing two lengths adrift of Hope Against Hope. That was his nursery debut and he ran off a mark of 66 there, but despite being ridden handy, he did not have much to offer in the final furlong. The suspicion was that the soft ground may have taxed the stamina of the William Haggas-trained juvenile. Down 1lb, he still has a little to prove on an all-weather surface, but division one of this 7f nursery does not look a great race and the drop in class may help boost his confidence.
