COOLCALMCOLLECTED (Wolverhampton 7.10) has twice gone close over 7f and may be able to gain compensation in division two of the 0-55 handicap. The David Loughnane-trained daughter of Acclamation was given a positive ride by champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa at Catterick last time and only just failed to hold on. If in the same sort of form off a 2lb higher mark, dropping back to 6f may well see her land the spoils on a track where she has run relatively well previously.
STEVIE BROWN (Wolverhampton 5.40) shaped with promise when sixth and unfancied on his Doncaster debut in July. David Brown’s representative somewhat franked that favourable impression when second to Society Red at Thirsk over 7f last month, despite sweating up beforehand. While that was a modest juvenile maiden, a little more improvement can be expected on his all-weather debut tonight, even though he goes up against some potentially fair sorts from big stables.
LARKHALL (2.20 Southwell) is not the easiest to win with but one of his two career successes under Rules came over today’s course and 1m7½f trip last October. The Mike Sowersby-trained nine-year-old has had plenty of chasing experience and there was nothing wrong with his two-and-a-quarter-length second to Gwili Spar at Uttoxeter last time. He runs off the same mark of 79 today.
TOFFEE APPLE (Ayr 5.30) looked to have had something of an off-day when last of 12 at Brighton as a joint-favourite earlier this month. The Keith Dalgliesh-trained filly has twice gone close over today’s course with ease in the ground and while ideally she appears to need further than this mile trip, her stamina should come into play on the likely heavy ground. She will be staying on when others have cried enough.
