Organizers also revealed the podiums for the upcoming Olympics:

The medals and podium were revealed at an event led by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who is in Brazil to assess the status of the country’s Olympic preparations.

The Olympics begin in 52 days on Aug. 5. Tuesday’s announcement is the latest medal design release since 2000, when the first official medals for the summer games in Sydney were revealed roughly a month before the opening ceremony.

The International Olympic Committee works with the Olympic committee of the host nation to develop the design for the medals.

First and second place medals are mostly composed of silver, with the gold medals coated in a thin layer of gold. Third place bronze medals are mostly copper.

The complete evolution of the medals can be seen on the official Olympics website.
