Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 1 (Arsenal win 3-2 on pens): Alex Iwobi grabs late equaliser to deny Bundesliga giants
Arsenal finally got the beating of Bayern Munich, albeit in the surroundings of a pre-season friendly in Shanghai. Alex Iwobi grabbed a last-gasp equaliser for Arsene Wenger's side by heading past Christian Früchtl in normal time to send the International Champions Cup into penalties. Iwobi, one of a number of second-half substitutes, then scored in the shoot-out while Nacho Monreal and Aaron Ramsey were also on target. Renato Sanches struck the bar with his effort while Juan Bernat saw his saved by Emiliano Martinez to ensure Arsenal of a 3-2 win on penalties. Bayern Munich, who had beaten Arsenal 5-1 on two occasions in the Champions League last season, looked like causing Arsenal further problems when they took an early lead with a Robert Lewandowski penalty after nine minutes. Arsenal celebrate after winning the International Champions Cup The Bundesliga champions would have added to their lead were it not for the brilliance of Petr Cech. Arsenal's record-signing Alexandre Lacazette had a great chance to level midway midway through the first half but saw his effort saved well by Bayern keeper Tom Starke. A raft of substitutions disrupted the flow of the contest in the second half but Iwobi impressed in his cameo role as Arsenal went on to lift the trophy. Arsenal will next face Chelsea this Saturday, July 22 at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing. 3:05PM Arsenal win 3-2 on pens Sorry for the delay, but for technical issues meant we weren't able to bring you the penalties live. What I can say is that Arsenal have won 3-2 with Ramsey, Monreal and Iwobi all on target for Wenger's side. Elneny was the only player to miss with Früchtl guessing the right way. Sanches and Bernat both missed their efforts for Bayern. Sanches powered his shot onto the bar while Martinez saved from Bernat to ensure Arsenal of the three points in the first match of the International Champions Cup. 2:30PM But wait, there's more. There are penalties We are not done yet people. 2:26PM FT Arsenal 1 Bayern 1 There's only time for Bayern to restart the game before the ref blows up. After conceding 15 goals in their last three clashes with the German giants, Arsenal got lucky at the end. It's only a pre-season friendly but the scoreline will give them confidence. Iwobi's header was their only shot on target in the second half. 2:24PM 90 mins + 3 GOAL!! Arsenal 1-1 Bayern But wait. There's drama at the death as Arsenal break clear, Ramsey dinks a ball into the middle and Iwobi plants his header past Früchtl! 2:21PM 90 mins + 2 Four minutes of stoppage time to be played as Bayern build form the back again through Hummels. Dorsche dribbles to the edge of the area, but Willock blocks his route through. 2:20PM 88 mins Sanches shows a touch of class by scooping a ball up and into the path of Bernat who charges in on goal from an acute angle. Bernat gets away from Maitland Niles, but Monreal is on hand to clear Arsenal's line. 2:16PM 86 mins Nelson has impressed in the right wing back, right full-back role. He's stayed disciplined this half and looked good going forward. 2:14PM 84 mins Walcott earns a free-kick just inside the Bayern half. Hummels kicks the ball away trying to bide the Bundesliga giants some time. The set-piece is taken but Arsenal are struggling to link up and Willock collects a booking for a lashing out at Dorsche. 2:10PM 79 mins Walcott puts his sprinting boots on, gets away from his man but is curling shot from the outside of his boot is easily dealt with by Frucht. That's the first time Bayern's substitute keeper has got his hands on the ball. 2:06PM 75 mins The changes to both sides have affected the flow of the friendly (as they always do). Sanches is trying to pull the strings for Bayern in the middle of the park but the ball goes out of play and Bayern prepare to make three more changes. Dorsch, Gotze and Friedl all come on with Ribery among others departing and another drinks break is taken. The intensity of the first half is a distant memory. 2:02PM 71 mins Another change: Cech comes off to a rapturous applause as Martinez takes his place. 2:01PM 69 mins Clever play from Nelson draws a foul from Pantovic down the right flank just outside the area. The 18-year-old will send over the set-piece but it's headed clear by Hummels. Nelso goes again, taking on Ribery and Bayern emerge with the ball as it bounces off the legs of Maitland Niles and out of play. 1:55PM 65 mins More subs: Lewandowski and James off, Pantovic and Wintzheimer on. 1:55PM 64 mins Iwobi shows great persistence and strength to win a free-kick with three Bayern bodies surrounding him. Maitland Niles whips in the set-piece but it's too high and long and Ramsey scampers to collect out wide. The ball is played long with Ribery bursting down the middle. Cech is out in a flash again to clear the danger. He was a full 35 yards off his line. 1:52PM 62 mins Arsenal yet to settle since all those four changes at the break. Wenger and Vic Akers are at the top of Arsenal's technical area having wild discussions. They will make another change, Ramsey replaces Xhaka. 1:49PM 59 mins Elneny finds himself in a spot of bother, the ball out of his reach. Elneny stretches and makes contact with Tolisso and earns himself a booking. It's a little unfair on Elneny who played the ball first but caught the Bayern man on his follow-through. 1:45PM 54 mins Ribery is rolling around on the sidelines receiving treatment following the effects of a heavy challenge from Maitland Niles. The Arsenal youngster arguably made a harder challenge on Bernat in the first half and was punished. Nothing doing this time. 1:44PM 53 mins Bramall shows a clean pair of heels to Hummels and gets past the German stalwart but his centre is mopped up in the middle. 1:40PM 49 mins Arsenal exposed down their left flank again as Lewandowski can't quite reach a centre from sub Coman. The Pole almost let the ball run on to James but the Colombian doesn't get a clean strike on the ball. 1:38PM 47 mins Arsenal have switched to a back four after being up against it in the first half. Welbeck looks to be the lone striker following the withdrawals of Lacazette and Ozil. 1:37PM Subs at the ready Iwobi, Walcott, Bramall and Willock all on for Arsenal. Ozil, Coquelin, Lacazette and Bielik all go off. Meanwhile, Frucht, Friedl and Sanches all come on for Bayern's Starke, Muller and Martinez. 1:20PM HT Arsenal 0-1 Bayern The whistle goes and Arsenal have been thankful for the saves of Cech during the first 45. Lacazette had a great chance to draw Wenger's side level but Starke showed great agility to deny the Frenchman of a second goal in an Arsenal shirt since his record-breaking move. Wenger, meanwhile, has been sporting his snazzy Arsenal trainers on the sidelines. Bielik keeps possession for Arsenal deep in the corner and they try and make progress down the right flank. Welbeck wins a challenge and they build from the back again. But it's Bayern who click through their gears as soon as they get on the ball. Ribery lays off the ball with the outside of his right boot but Xhaka clears the danger. 1:15PM 43 mins Arsenal make a change, Nelson coming on for Kolasinac. Not clear whether an injury was behind the early switch or for Kolasinac's lack of awareness in tracking James. 1:13PM 42 mins James is unmarked, looming on the edge of the area and finally Ribery picks his team-mate out. He brings it down with the outside of his left boot and shapes to shoot but Cech is onto the danger in a flash. 1:10PM 39 mins Cech again to the rescue, this time to deny Bernat. Maitland-Niles shows too much space to Ribery who gets to the byline, pulls back for Bernat whose effort is palmed away by the former Czech international. 1:08PM 37 mins Cech reacts well to a deflected Muller strike to flick the ball round the post for a corner. Muller's effort was heading one direction before catching the heel of Elneny but the 35-year-old keeper responded well. 1:06PM 35 mins Welbeck latches on to a loose ball, he chests it down but couldn't get his arm out of the way. The eager ref isn't going to let that go. 1:02PM 32 mins Lacazette is through! The Frenchman looks set to bury the ball, but his low effort is saved by Starke and it goes out for a corner. 1:00PM 29 mins Good slow build up from Arsenal as they work their way to the box but then Lacazette loses out to Hummels. The players then break for a drinks break on the half hour mark. Ancelotti is very animated on the sidelines with his side. Wenger, less so, in fact the players are walking away from their manager. 12:55PM 24 mins Martinez also in the book for Bayern for something that happened off the ball. Arsenal starting to win more possession and have more cohesion in midfield but Bayern continue to break quickly and with intent against an inexperienced back three. James in action for Bayern 12:53PM 21 mins Let off for Arsenal! Muller has yards of space to head down into the path of Tolisso who finishes well but the flag is up. A look at a reply shows the linesman got it wrong. 12:50PM 20 mins Lacazette finally gets time on the ball, but loses possession. Arsenal win it back but then Xhaka passes straight to Ribery. Coquelin goes in late on the Frenchman and collects the first yellow of the match. 12:48PM 18 mins Arsenal trying to slow the pace down. Monreal and Kolsinac link up down the left and play in Ozil. The German tries to dribble through Bayern's rearguard but is faced with a brick wall. 12:47PM 15 mins Men against boys early doors again as Ribery swaggers through Arsenal's new back three. He pulls the ball back in the middle, but there's no-one in a red shirt bursting into the box. 12:42PM 12 mins Ozil latches on to a ball over the top from Welbeck. The German international makes a fantastic run and catches the ball on the volley but strikes straight at Starke. 12:40PM 9 mins - Arsenal 0-1 Bayern (Lewandowski pen) Lewandowski sends Cech the wrong way with a comfortable side-foot into the top right-hand corner. It seemed a tad harsh of the ref to award the penalty. Maitland-Niles was just slightly off the pace and got caught out by Bernat. Our no. 9️⃣ in the 9️⃣th minute! #FCBARS@lewy_official#AudiFCBTour 1-0 pic.twitter.com/HcaWDyifrl— FC Bayern English (@FCBayernEN) July 19, 2017 12:39PM 8 mins - Bayern penalty Maitland-Niles is punished for a foul on Bernat. 12:38PM 8 mins First move for Arsenal into the final third as Welbeck finds space and lays the ball off to the on-rushing Xhaka. He lets fly from the edge of the area but it sails over the bar. 12:36PM 6 mins Kolasinac goes it alone down the left flank but runs into trouble and Bayern break again. Ribery faces space close to the byline and delivers a ball to the back post where James is lurking. The Colombian brings the ball down on his chest, but shoots into the side-netting. A first opening for Bayern. 12:34PM 3 mins Ozil looks to be playing down the right channel, is held off easily by Bernat. Now the back-three of Elneny, Monreal and Bielik are given their first workout as a long ball forward deceives Elneny. They finally clear their lines. 12:32PM 1 min James Rodriquez, in his first start for Bayern, gets a feel for things as Bayern dominate possess straight from kick-off with some slick passing. Arsenal have barely got a foot on the ball. They finally win possession when Lewandowski is offside. 12:30PM Arsenal in the dark Or more to the point, in all-black with a Chinese logo taking the place of their usual sponsors on the front of their jersey. The excited Chinese fans in the stands don't seem to be too bothered by the hold up as they frantically wave their Arsenal and Bayern merchandise. Everyone seems to be kitted out in a replica shirt too. It's a sea of red out there. 12:18PM Hold up Lots of people coming through the turnstiles at the 58,000-capacity Shanghai Stadium. It looks like it's not going to get underway on time. We're still awaiting the teams. 12:15PM Late change to Arsenal line-up Mohamed Elneny replaces Per Mertesacker who has been forced to pull out of the friendly with illness. One late change to our starting lineup @mertesacker drops out through illness, to be replaced by @ElNennyMpic.twitter.com/LTHQ7ot7vU— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) July 19, 2017 12:12PM What role for Lacazette today? Lacazette has been given a gentle welcome to life at Arsenal, playing out wide during the Australia leg of the pre-season tour so far. Could today be the first time that Wenger throws the Frenchman down the middle? Wenger could opt to play their record-signing as a lone striker with Ozil and Welbeck out wide. Alternatively, he could decide to play Lacazette just off Welbeck. Lacazette scored against Sydney FC last week 12:03PM Mahrez reminds Arsenal of his talents While Arsenal are out in China, target Riyad Mahrez has reminded Wenger of his talents with a great solo goal from just outside the box for Leicester in their pre-season friendly against West Brom. Mahrez hits back for Leicester! #LCFCpic.twitter.com/r78vqm3gEJ— G (@SimplySmithies) July 19, 2017 Mahrez is said to be holding out for a move to Arsenal this summer. Wenger, however, seems to be prioritising Monaco winger Thomas Lemar before turning his attentions elsewhere. 11:47AM Sanchez going nowhere? Arsene Wenger gave his clearest indication this summer that Arsenal will refuse to sell Alexis Sanchez. You can't blame Arsenal fans for fearing the worst and for a feeling of deja vu. Wenger previously allowed sell Samri Nasri and Robin van Persie to leave rather than let them enter the final year of their contracts – but he is adamant that the Sanchez situation is different. “Every case is different, Van Persie was going from 30 to 31, when he left he had one year on his contract, Sanchez is younger,” Wenger said yesterday. Sanchez is currently on holiday after playing for Chile at the Confederations Cup earlier this month. Our team to play @FCBayern: Cech, Bielik, Mertesacker, Monreal, Maitland-Niles, Coquelin, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Ozil, Welbeck, Lacazette— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) July 19, 2017 11:21AM Match preview Arsenal begin the Chinese leg of their pre-season tour with a match against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich this lunch time (kick-off 12.20pm). Arsene Wenger's side have conceded 15 goals to the German giants in their last three encounters with their rivals, two of which came in last season's Champions League. But, having signed a new contract at the end of the season, Wenger heads into today's friendly and the season ahead with renewed hope. The International Champions Cup provides Arsenal with a sterner test of their ability following a sedate tour of Australia (where they collected two wins in three days), as they also take on Chelsea in three days' time. Arsenal will also face Benfica (July 29) and Sevilla (July 30) in the Emirates Cup as they build up to their Premier League opener against Leicester on Friday, August 11.
