The Pattern is a very different kind of astrology tool, one that allows users to explore their charts and reveal the larger stories of their lives, behaviors, and personalities, and how they interact with the charts of those closest to them. It's a tall order, but it has clearly struck a nerve, spreading by word of mouth to reach over a million downloads—and truly mess with Channing Tatum's understanding of the universe.
In other words, the Pattern app doesn't have users so much as devotees, and until very recently, its founder was a mystery. But Lisa Donovan is taking credit for her creation now. "I'd had a private reading from an astrologer, and afterward, I couldn’t find an app that was anywhere near as deep, thorough, and personalized as that session," she tells BAZAAR.com about how The Pattern came to be. "I wanted to mimic that one-on-one experience, which made me feel incredibly seen and understood. So I set out to build something that could feel as detailed, intimate, and profound as a private reading."
Those detailed, often shockingly accurate readings are the result of a unique algorithm and a well of personalized content, written most often in Donovan's own voice. "We removed the astrology jargon to make the insights easier to understand and digest. We wanted to speak to users in a language they could really relate to," she explains. We wanted to get to know the woman behind the app better—obviously, by way of her shopping choices. Below, see Donovan's lucky 13 picks, from essential oils to good jeans.
