Exclusive - Admit women or lose Tokyo Games golf, IOC tells club

By Kwiyeon Ha SAPPORO, Japan (Reuters) - The club scheduled to host the golf at the 2020 Tokyo Games must allow women to have full membership or organisers will have to find another venue, International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice president John Coates told Reuters on Monday. The private Kasumigaseki Country Club in Saitama prefecture, which is set to host both men's and women's tournaments in July and August 2020, forbids women from playing on Sundays and excludes them from becoming full members. Coates, who is head of the coordination commission which oversees preparations for the Games, said he had only become aware of the issue on his last visit to Tokyo at the end of last year and that organisers were now aware of the IOC's stance. Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos flagged he might withdraw from the 2024 race but rejected responsibility for allowing the bid to fall apart, saying it was always a national matter in Hungary. More »

    • Who is the Momentum youth movement tackling Hungary's political elite with its 'NOlympia' campaign?

Who is the Momentum youth movement tackling Hungary's political elite with its 'NOlympia' campaign?

A youth movement is making the political elite in Hungary sit up and take notice after it gathered almost twice as many signatures needed to spark Budapest's first ever referendum as it tries to get the city's bid to host the 2024 Olympics scrapped. Momentum Mozgalom only emerged in the last two years with its 'NOlympia' campaign opposing the vast expense of the Games, money it says would be better spent in other parts of the economy. The group, whose members are predominantly under 35, has collected more than quarter of a million signatures opposing the bid. More »
