With Rooney becoming Manchester United’s top goal scorer, we look at his best strikes for the Red Devils down the years.
Manchester United vs Newcastle, 2005
Rooney had always been a fiery character, so it was no surprise when he was giving the referee a mouthful mid-match. What came next though, was a bit more of a shock. The young forward latched onto a clearance some 25 yards out and volleyed a thunderous strike beyond Shay Given.
Manchester United vs Wigan, 2005
The England striker put Paul Jewell’s Wigan to the sword as he scored twice in a 4-0 win. The first of which involved some delightful skill and determination in winning the ball back having slipped over, before firing low into the net.
Manchester United vs Arsenal, 2006
The Red Devils striker showed his composure in abundance for this cracker against rivals Arsenal. Following a long cross into the box, Rooney took a wonderful first touch and slammed the ball home, to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Manchester United vs Middlesbrough,
Back when the FA Cup was still one of the most coveted trophies, Rooney slammed home for United against Premier League side Middlesbrough. Running on to a Louis Saha header, Rooney hit a first time volley into the far corner, past a helpless Mark Schwarzer.
Manchester United vs Wigan, 2009
The United striker used all of his pace and deft finishing to make Mike Pollitt look foolish. Running on to a long pass over the Wigan defence, Rooney enticed Pollitt out of his goal before chipping the ball into the net and wrap up a 5-0 win.
Manchester United vs Watford, 200
Rooney struck hard and true in the sixth minute of Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final against Watford in 2007. Cutting inside from the left flank, the forward hit a piledriver into the roof of the net.
Manchester United vs Everton, 2007
The former Everton prodigy came back to inflict defeat on the Toffees at Goodison Park. Rooney controlled the ball, leaving Tony Hibbert for dead before finishing from a tight angle.
Manchester United vs Bolton, 2007
Back when Ronaldo and Rooney were terrorising Premier League defences, the duo combined to score a ferocious counter attacking goal against Bolton. It wouldn’t be the first time they did to such ruthless effect (just ask Arsenal fans).
Manchester United vs Manchester City
What a way to win a derby. With less than 13 minutes to go, Nani’s deflected cross came to Rooney at an awkward angle. Nevermind that, though, as the England forward pulled out a textbook overhead kick into the far corner, leaving Joe Hart without a prayer.
Manchester United vs West Ham, 2014
With the 2013-14 season drawing to a close, Wayne Rooney saved his best til late on. With echoes of David Beckham’s stunning halfway line goal, Rooney picked up the ball just seven minutes into the match, marginally inside the Hammers’ half and smashed it over Adrian from nearly 60 yards out.
Manchester United vs Fenerbahce, 2004
What a way to announce yourself on the big stage. Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United -and Champions League – debut ended in a hat-trick.
Everton vs Arsenal, 2002
For good measure…A 16-year-old Wayne Rooney made a sensational Premier League debut, scoring a fantastic winner against Arsenal – who were on a stunning 30-match unbeaten run before his goal
