World Cup day three - VAR controversy, Argentina held by Iceland and more

After all the excitement of Friday night, we’re all wondering what this super Saturday has in store for us.

We’re bringing you all the action – starting with one of the favourites France, who with the aid of VAR, slogged their way to an unconvincing 2-1 win over Australia.

But the biggest headline of the day (so far) has been reserved for Lionel Messi. After rival Cristiano Ronaldo lit up the World Cup with a hat-trick against Spain on day two, Messi and Argentina were hoping to do the same against Iceland.

However, debutants Iceland, the smallest nation to ever qualify for the the World Cup, held their much more fancied rivals to a 1-1 all draw. To make matter worse for Messi he missed a second half penalty as Argentina blew their chance to open their campaign with a morale-boosting win.

Argentina’s draw was still being digested when Peru faced heartbreak of their own, missing a penalty and losing 1-0 to Denmark despite dominating much of the match.

Saturday’s bumper day of action is rounded out by Nigeria and Croatia squaring off from Group D. Can either country take advantage of Argentina’s draw? Find out here
