Three goalkeepers Liverpool could sign to replace Simon Mignolet

It’s fair to say that goalkeeper has been a problem position for Liverpool in recent years. Indeed, ‘problem position’ doesn’t quite do justice to the steady flow of errors which have spilled through the porous palms of Simon Mignolet.

While Mignolet is not solely responsible for Liverpool’s shaky defensive record over the past few seasons – Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure and Alberto Moreno, anyone? – his penchant for high-profile mistakes hasn’t helped his cause with the fans.

Who can forget his through-the-legs, near-post nightmare in the 2016 League Cup final, for instance? Or his stunningly ineffectual performance in the 3-3 draw with Arsenal earlier this season?

With Loris Karius starting ahead of him in Liverpool’s win against Manchester City last weekend, Mignolet has now admitted that he’ll have to consider his future at the club. “After the game against Burnley I had a conversation with the coach, among other things about his ongoing rotation. I did not find that a healthy situation for a goalkeeper,” he said.

“My place on the bench against City confirmed his words. I am not satisfied with [being dropped] but you have to respect a decision of the trainer.”

Liverpool supporters won’t be too upset if Mignolet decided to leave the club, though Klopp will need to sign someone to replace him and compete with (or immediately usurp) Karius. Here are three goalkeeping options the Reds manager could pursue in the transfer market, using some of the £142million nestled cosily in the bank after the sale of Philippe Coutinho.

Jan Oblak

Oblak would be the dream signing, the fantasy transfer for Liverpool fans. Having secured a starting spot at Atletico Madrid and made 136 appearances for the club since he joined in 2014, the Slovenian has drawn inevitable comparisons to fellow Atleti veteran Thibaut Courtois.

While he is one of the most highly rated goalkeepers in La Liga and has kept four clean sheets in his last five games, Oblak currently plays behind a back four which has conceded a league-low eight goals this season and is organised by Diego Simeone, a manager who looks like a villainous PI in a gritty Spanish crime drama and moulds his teams in roughly the same image. Despite the arrival of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, marshalling the Liverpool back line would be a more difficult proposition.

Reported cost: Upwards of £50million

Jack Butland

Despite Stoke’s troubles this term, Jack Butland’s reputation as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in the Premier League has remained largely intact. Often marooned behind a chaotic defence, the 24-year-old has managed to emerge with some credit if not exactly covered in glory.

Though he’s a long way off Oblak’s level as thing stand, Butland would represent a potential upgrade on Mignolet and Karius. Not exactly immune to the odd glaring error himself, however, he might not be the finished article between the sticks which Liverpool need.

Reported cost: Around £35million

Kevin Trapp

Kevin Trapp is something of a wildcard, given that the 27-year-old has had to tussle with Alphonse Areola (and previously Salvatore Sirigu) for a starting spot at PSG. Nonetheless, the German stopper has done enough to catch the eye of scouts across Europe in recent seasons.

While it might be easier to convince PSG to part with him than it would to acquire a first-choice keeper like Oblak or Butland, Trapp would represent a much riskier signing. He could be a revelation at Liverpool, or turn out to be Mignolet Mk II.

Reported cost: £10-15million
