There is a lack of arrogance in this England team, according to Mick McCarthy, and he believes that is entirely down to Gareth Southgate.

The goodwill shown towards Southgate’s England side shows no sign of stopping, even if they do go out against Sweden, and McCarthy could not praise Southgate enough.

Appearing as a guest on Yahoo Sport’s daily World Cup show, the former Republic of Ireland boss said there is no ‘excess baggage’ in the squad, with the focus entirely on football.

He suggested that has not always been the case: “Well I think he’s brought a calmness to it, and a lot of humility to the job. The players have been a lot more humble through this World Cup,” he explained.

“They don’t seem to have brought a load of excess baggage with them – the outside stuff. It has been about football and it seems to me that they’re being very caring with the community in Russia and embraced all the support that they’ve been given by these people.

“I think that’s down to Gareth, certainly. And I think that calmness and consistency with how he deals with him, they went into the shootout like that.

“They’ve not been high when they’ve won and they’ve not been low when they’ve lost. He’s been consistent all along and that’s important in management.”
