Manchester City have confirmed rumours that had begun to circulate in recent months that Amazon – online consumer outlet and corporate giants – have begun work on the production of a behind the scenes, fly on the wall style documentary.

The Blues have already offered the club’s supporters an inside look at training sessions and the like through their rather aptly titled weekly YouTube series Inside City, which now has 269 instalments, spanning over the last five years. That series has been acknowledged by many as being amongst the best free football club content available, if not the best.

But the interest from Amazon, which has culminated in a deal worth over 10 million and will look deep into the running of the Etihad Stadium outfit, epitomises the continuously growing interest in the football club and highlights the steady global growth of the club’s fanbase; the Amazon documentary is set to air in over 200 countries worldwide.

The series will follow the Citizens over the course of the current 2017/18 season and will be available to watch in Autumn 2018 on Amazon Prime – by which time, Pep Guardiola’s side should have their hands on at least one piece of silverware.

The concept itself reminds one of the deal Liverpool made with Fox Soccer for a programme which was broadcast by Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, and will include footage from the City Football Academy, executive meetings and exclusive interviews with Guardiola.

“We are delighted to begin this strategic relationship with Amazon, one of the world’s leading companies,” said City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano.

“Amazon Prime Video is the perfect home for a ground-breaking project that will offer a unique and authentic inside view into Manchester City’s season like never before.

“This is an extremely exciting time for Manchester City and through Amazon’s world-class service, we will be able to share it with football fans all over the world.”

Amazon’s desire to provide in-depth coverage of one of the biggest sides in one of the biggest leagues in world football only serves to fuel the widespread belief that online media platforms, including Amazon Video but also the likes of Facebook, will lodge bids for the rights to broadcast Premier League football matches when the current television deal expires in 2019.

The fact that City are at the centre of such a massive development in the contemporary coverage of football games is indicative of their growing position in the ranking of the elite clubs – a trend which shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
