Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise fears that appointing Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor could lead to a number of big names leaving Anfield.

He put forward Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as an alternative given his work with the Seagulls, and meanwhile, he says he can see Klopp being interested in replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager once he has enjoyed a break.

Liverpool have agreed a compensation package with Feyenoord for Slot, with the hunt for a new manager appearing to be concluding. A number of analysts are apprehensive about his imminent appointment, given that he has only worked in Dutch football.

Riise reckons that the 45-year-old has a job to convince the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to stay with just 12 months remaining on their contracts. Speaking about the transfer window, the Norwegian told Boyle Sports Premier League Odds: "Liverpool's transfer targets all depend on who they appoint as a manager.

“It depends on who is leaving and who comes in as a manager. Is Van Dijk going to stay? Is Salah going to stay? I fear they may look elsewhere in the summer.”

Regarding the next Reds manager, Riise said: “I know Slot is in pole position, but I love what De Zerbi has done at Brighton. He would be a good fit because he's so focused on being who he is, he doesn't change, he goes his own way. I would love to see him at Liverpool."

He added: “It depends on what direction they want to go and also Klopp's admiration for De Zerbi is a factor. Klopp, one way or another, will be giving the club some insight into how they should move forward and who they should look at and I believe De Zerbi is one of the top contenders and I'd be delighted to have him.”

Meanwhile, Riise believes that Klopp's natural next step will be to manage a national team. Julian Nagelsamnn signed a two-year deal with Germany last month, taking him to the 2026 World Cup and ruling out a Klopp appointment for now.

Southgate has previously hinted that this summer's Euros could be his last tournament as England boss, although he has equally refused to rule out staying on. Riise says he could envisage Klopp leading out the Three Lions if Southgate does exit amid tentative links with Manchester United.

“Nobody knows what Klopp will do but I have a feeling he will become a national team manager next,” he said. “I don't know where, and he will take a break because that's why he is leaving.

“He's done everything as a club manager so I think he will challenge himself to be a national team coach, to win the Euros or World Cup. I could see him managing England, possibly.

“After Southgate leaves, I think both Klopp and Pep Guardiola will be very interested in the England job. That's the one national team job that everyone wants to do well in. That could be a big challenge and a new one for both of them.”
