Arsenal fan with terminal cancer left shocked as club denies membership transfer

Arsenal's response to the request of a terminally ill fan left her shocked

An Arsenal fan with terminal cancer was left stunned when the club denied her request to transfer a membership to a family member.

Alys Courtney, the writer behind the blog ‘New Mum, Mad Family, Annoying Labradoodle and a bit of Cancer’, has less than 12 months to live.

The long-term Gunner has been a ‘Red Member’ at the Emirates Stadium for more than 10 years - a status which grants fans priority access to match tickets.

She is working towards an upgrade to ‘Silver Member’ status, which will grant her earlier access.

But having emailed the north London club to inform them of her illness and request to transfer it to a family member, she was left stunned by the response.

Arsenal replied: “We are very sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, we wish you the best with your treatment and recovery process.

“Unfortunately memberships are non-transferable therefore it won’t be possible for you to transfer the membership to a family member.”

Ms Courtney told inews.co.uk: “I was more upset with the blasé response wishing me a speedy recovery – I’m not going to recover.

“I’ve religiously paid my thirty-odd quid a year in the hope of getting closer to the Holy Grail of Silver Membership but it looks like a bit of a scam, which isn’t what I’d expect from the football club I love.”

The club, when asked for reply, said they are aiming to “resolve this as quickly as possible.”
