Arsenal Fan View: Transfer Window review

Arsenal unveil new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at London Colney on Deadline day, January 31, 2018.

There are good days and there are bad days. Then there are days when Arsenal spend £50m+ on a world class 28-year old striker and Mesut Ozil signs a new deal. Such is the magic of Deadline day.

But this magic does not come without a price to paid. Ask any Arsenal fan, and the state of emotions they’ve gone through the last two days is close to paranoia. Happiness, joy, hope; followed closely by sickening and a deep sadness strung up together in a nice bundle.

And while most football fans are used to being in this bundle, the Gunners faithful have not tasted this feeling since times unknown. Seriously, when was the last time Wenger brought in two 28+ players in the same window, much less the winter one?

Thankfully though, the bundle of emotions currently represents more positive feelings than otherwise. The arrivals of Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan and the extension of Ozil’s contract clearly outweigh the departures of Giroud and Alexis. Although one of those exit’s certainly hurts more than the other, the fan base remains united on the conclusion that this was indeed a good window.

The Gabonese striker brings pace to already electric attack and with his old partner in crime soon to be playing behind him, Arsenal fans should be excited. Mkhitaryan’s debut may have come in a forgettable game for the Gunners, but his cameo did look promising.

His link up play-however short-was intriguing to watch as it clearly gives Ozil what he’s missing in the midfield. Ever since the injury to Cazorla, it’s as if Mesut has no other creative mind working on his frequency.

This is why it will become critical for Wenger to continue to look for a solution to feature all of his main four in the side. Lacazette may feel a little pressurized by the arrival of Aubameyang, but there is enough reason to let them play together. The biggest one: that glaring hole in defense.

Fare ye well, Giroud

Of course, when one striker comes in, one has to go out. A majority of Arsenal fans would probably have preferred if it were Welbeck, but even this window wasn’t going to remove all the deadwood from the club.

Olivier Giroud’s shift to the other side of London was always going to be something that hurt any Arsenal fan. His commitment to the club was unquestionable as was his talent on the pitch. And he showed both qualities in the manner in which he left the club he loves.

The Frenchman’s transfer to Chelsea was the missing piece of the puzzle for Arsenal to get Aubameyang. In his own way, Giroud served the club he has a 100+ goals for, one last time. And now the Blues have what is probably the most handsome front-line in the Premier League.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank big Oli for everything. You were an absolute gentleman and we were lucky to have you. Take good care of him, Chelsea.
