Brewers place Corbin Burnes on IL, decline to say why

One of the hottest starts in MLB has been interrupted, but it may not be for long.

The Milwaukee Brewers placed burgeoning ace Corbin Burnes on the injured list on Thursday, pausing a historic start in which the right-hander has posted 49 strikeouts without walking a single batter.

However, you may notice some details missing from the team's Burnes announcement compared to the next sentence:

The team declined to reveal the reason for Burnes' placement on the IL, and also didn't say they were placing him on the 10-day IL.

In all likelihood, that means Burnes has been placed on the COVID-19 related IL, a separate list for players who either test positive for COVID-19 are found to have been in close contact with an infected person or are dealing with vaccine side effects. Teams are typically not allowed to reveal a player's positive test without his permission and may not want to reveal the situation regardless, hence the vagueness with the Brewers' announcement.

If Burnes is indeed on the COVID IL, he could be back in just a couple days if it's due to side effects or at least 10 days if he has tested positive. That's a big question with the Brewers playing the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend and Burnes scheduled to start Sunday.

Burnes currently holds a 1.53 ERA and a league-leading 0.545 WHIP, by virtue of not walking a single batter. In a world without Jacob deGrom, he'd be considered the hottest pitcher in the league right now.
