Chelsea 2 Palmeiras 1 (after extra time)

  • Lukaku heads Chelsea into lead in second half

  • Veiga equalises for Brazilians after Thiago Silva handball

  • Havertz calmly strokes home winner from penalty spot late on

Roman Abramovich can now say the club he bought back in 2003 to create a football winning machine really has won it all under his ownership after Kai Havertz once again made himself a Chelsea hero.

Seated in the ‘VVIP Area’ inside the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Abramovich watched Chelsea become Club World Cup champions for the first time in their history.

It had been a 10-year wait to get another chance at this competition thanks to a Havertz goal in the final of the Champions League and it was the German who kept his cool again - this time from the penalty spot in extra-time - to break the hearts of the Palmeiras fans.

Thomas Tuchel had made a 3,400-mile journey on Friday to be in Abu Dhabi for the final, having tested negative for coronavirus, and Chelsea have now already won three trophies under the German with the possibility of a fourth to come later this month.

Chelsea hold the Club World Cup, Champions League and Uefa Super Cup trophies, ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, which makes the 16-point Manchester City have opened up between the two clubs in the Premier League a little more bearable.

While this final and Chelsea’s performance was in no way a classic, it did contain several storylines worthy of any big event. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who earned the dramatic extra-time penalty, has become the first player to lift every trophy with the club. Romelu Lukaku, who opened the scoring for Chelsea, has finally won his first piece of silverware with the club and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is now a European, African and world champion.

This had been billed as being the bigger occasion for Palmeiras, whose noisy fans travelled to Abu Dhabi in much larger numbers than Chelsea, but the way in which Havertz and his team-mates celebrated demonstrated how important this was for Chelsea.

The winning spot-kick came in the 117th minute after Palmeiras defender Luan handled an Azpilicueta shot in the box and referee Chris Beath awarded a penalty after Var sent him to look at the screen for the second time in the final.

Luan’s nightmare end to the game went from bad to worse, as he was sent-off for a professional foul on Havertz right at the end, following Beath’s third Var check of the evening.

Whether or not the Club World Cup proves to be the making of Lukaku in a blue shirt remains to be seen, but he has made important steps, crucially in front of Abramovich, in this competition, even though he was substituted in normal time by Tuchel on Saturday night.

Chelsea’s club record signing did not make much of an impact during the opening 45 minutes, but it was only 10 minutes after the break that Lukaku, who scored Chelsea’s winner in the semi-final against Al Hilal, broke the deadlock thanks to a great piece of play from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The makeshift left-back, preferred to Marcos Alonso, produced the perfect cross for Lukaku to head the ball expertly past the helpless Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton and, for the first time, the Brazilian supporters were drowned out by Chelsea celebrations.

What a year this has been for Mendy, back from winning the African Cup of Nations with Senegal and reinstated into Tuchel’s team ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had been so good in his absence.

He could not stop Palmeiras equalising from the penalty spot, just nine minutes after Lukaku had given Chelsea the lead, but Mendy cannot seem to stop collecting winners’ medals and awards.

Thiago Silva thought he had got away with a challenge on Gustavo Gomez when the ball had hit his hand, but Beath quickly stopped play and awarded the penalty after Var had suggested he look at the incident on the screen. Raphael Veiga, in front of the Palmeiras fans, kept his cool to beat Mendy and level the final.

Christian Pulisic, who replaced the injured Mason Mount just after half-an-hour, went close to restoring Chelsea’s lead with 17 minutes of normal time remaining with a side-footed effort that curled inches wide of Weverton’s right-hand post.

Tuchel made a double change and, slightly surprisingly, took off the two men who had combined for Chelsea’s opening goal - Lukaku and Hudson-Odoi - and replaced them with Timo Werner and on-loan midfielder Saul Niguez.

It appeared questionable to replace Lukaku rather than Havertz, who offered little until the second half of extra-time, but, as has so often been the case, Tuchel was eventually proved right.

Frustrations boiled over at the end of first half of extra-time, as Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech argued near the touchline, pointing and shouting at each other, but that was all forgotten about as Chelsea clinched a dramatic victory thanks to Havertz keeping his cool when he was presented with his chance from the spot.

Weverton has earned a reputation for being one of the best penalty savers in world football and Palmeiras clearly fancied their chances in a shootout. But the goalkeeper could not get anywhere near Havertz’s brilliant kick that put Chelsea, Abramovich and Tuchel on top of the world.

Chelsea vs Palmeiras, Club World Cup final - as it happened

7:22PM

Matt Law's full match report

Will be at the top of this blog shortly.

7:21PM

Here's Thomas Tuchel

'If you score late you need luck to do it. We were relentless, we were trying and trying - we did not give in... we never stopped attacking so I think it's deserved but it is lucky if you score so late.'

7:19PM

Reaction from the match-winner Kai Havertz

'Just amazing, after champions of Europe to be champions of the world - that sounds better. It's amazing.

'It was a big penalty, a big goal yet again and it's good I kept the nerves [in check] - I'm really happy.'

7:10PM

FULL TIME! Chelsea 2 Palmeiras 1

Chelsea have done it!

7:10PM

RED CARD!

The ref sends Luan off after checking the pitchside monitor - he was the last man and unceremoniously clattered Havertz who would have been through on goal.

Seconds remaining here.

7:09PM

120+4 min Chelsea 2 Palmeiras 1

We're still going here even though there were only three minutes added on...

Havertz is slipped through but Palmeiras defender Luan slides and scythes him down!

The referee waves play on with the Brazilians claiming he won the ball.

7:06PM

120+2 min Chelsea 2 Palmeiras 1

Into the final minute now and Chelsea have a free-kick in their own half. Not sure Rudiger will be in any rush to take this one...

7:01PM

GOALLL! Chelsea 2 Palmeiras 1

Havertz is calmness personified from 12 yards. He sends Weverton the wrong way and casually strokes the ball home.

Chelsea lead with just four minutes of extra time remaining.

6:59PM

Penalty to Chelsea!!

Azpilicueta's volley from a corner smashes into Luan's hand from point-blank range.

The Chelsea players are adamant it's a pen and after a short delay the referee is asked to take a look at the pitchside screen - and he awards the penalty!

6:57PM

112 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Brilliant defending! Ziyech whips a delicious cross in from the Chelsea right and Havertz looks as if he's about to nod it home unchallenged, but a Palmeiras defender just manages to nod it away for a corner.

6:54PM

110 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

A stop-start opening to the second half of extra time, with Weverton going down under a challenge from Havertz, perhaps hoping to waste a bit of time for his side.

Then Werner has a sniff of a chance but fires over from the edge of the area.

6:49PM

Here we go

Fifteen minutes for one of these players to make themselves a hero - or else we're heading for penalties.

6:46PM

105 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

That's half-time in extra time and these sides have just 15 minutes to claim a winner now.

As it stands Edouard Mendy is in line for his second penalty shootout in a week.

6:43PM

103 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Chelsea have been totally dominant in the extra-time period with Palmeiras struggling to get a foothold.

But the Brazilians have been solid in defence - as they have throughout in fairness.

6:40PM

99 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Chelsea hit the woodwork! Werner darts in behind and cuts it back towards Pulisic who is crowded out by two Palmeiras defenders - but the block rebounds up and over Weverton and hits the angle of post and bar!

6:38PM

98 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Palmeiras lose the ball sloppily in central midfield and Chelsea's Sarr picks it up and strides forward.

Werner is screaming for a pass into feet on the left edge of the box but Sarr opts to shoot - and lashes it miles over.

6:35PM

95 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Fairly uneventful start to extra-time. A chipped free-kick from Chelsea sub Ziyech is easily headed away by the stoic Palmeiras defence.

6:31PM

After a short break

The players are ready and Chelsea have kicked off the extra-time period.

6:24PM

FULL TIME - Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

We're heading to extra time! Just like Liverpool against Flamengo in 2019, the England vs Brazil Club World Cup final will need an extra 30 minutes to decide a winner.

6:22PM

90+2 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Werner swings a left-footed cross in towards Havertz - and Palmeiras keeper Weverton charges forward to claim but gets nowhere near it!

Fortunately one of his defenders bails him out and heads clear... the ball drops to Kovacic on the edge of the box but he blasts a volley miles over.

Just over two minutes to find a winner.

6:20PM

90+1 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Chance for Chelsea here with a free-kick in Palmeiras territory... but Pulisic's delivery is headed clear.

6:18PM

88 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Palmeiras look the most likely side to find a late winner here. Atuesta has a good opportunity for a cross which is slightly overhit - then the Brazilians win a throw-in off Azipilicueta.

Chelsea seem to be lacking a bit of urgency, their performance has petered out. The Abu Dhabi heat taking its toll?

6:13PM

83 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Well-worked move down their right by Palmeiras but Wesley's low cross is booted clear by Christensen.

Chelsea have gone totally off the boil since the Brazilians' equaliser.

6:10PM

80 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Ten minutes plus stoppage time to go. Can someone net a winner or are we heading to extra time?

6:09PM

Two substitutions apiece

Chelsea:Lukaku and Hudson-Odoi off; Werner and Saul on

Palmeiras: Rony and Raphael Veiga off; Wesley and Atuesta on

6:03PM

72 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Close! Kante darts forward and feeds Lukaku who has his back to goal. The Belgian plays a deft first-time lay-off to Pulisic - but the American drags his shot wide.

That was a glorious chance.

6:01PM

70 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Lovely stuff from Palmeiras on the edge of the Chelsea box, some tricky interplay creates a bit of space for the goalscorer Veiga - but his snap-shot on the turn is straight at Mendy.

5:57PM

66 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

This has been a superb response from the South American champions who were under the pump after the break and then a goal down too.

But they had a decent spell just before the equaliser and have managed to peg Chelsea back - albeit from the penalty spot.

5:53PM

GOAL!! Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 1

Raphael Veiga sends Mendy the wrong way from the spot and it's all square!

Raphael Veiga swept home his spot-kick
Raphael Veiga swept home his spot-kick

5:52PM

Palmeiras penalty!

The referee has been asked to look at the pitchside monitor which always spells trouble.

And it looks like the ball has struck Thiago Silva's arm as he jumped for a header - and the ref has award a penalty to Palmeiras!

5:51PM

60 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 0

Chance for Palmeiras! A bit of pinball in the Chelsea area and the ball falls to Dudu who scuffs his snap shot at Mendy who claims comfortably.

The Palmeiras players are asking for a penalty for handball... what will Var have to say?

5:47PM

55 min Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 0

Close! Nearly a quickfire second for Chelsea. Pulisic plays a lovely one-two with Lukaku but the American's strike from the edge of the box drifts just wide of the post.

It's been much more like it from Chelsea in the second half.

5:44PM

GOAL!!! Chelsea 1 Palmeiras 0

Hudson-Odoi finds himself in space down the left yet again and delivers a super cross towards Lukaku, who shrugs off  his marker and plants a header into the corner past Weverton!

5:38PM

48 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Decent start to the second half from Chelsea who are straight on the front foot.

But Hudson-Odoi has wasted two decent crossing opportunities - dinking one ball well behind any of his team-mates in the box and then overhitting a free-kick from the left flank.

5:35PM

46 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

We're back under way in Abu Dhabi.

5:19PM

HALF TIME - Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Not much to shout about for either side. Chelsea have struggled to create any clear-cut chances against a well-organised Palmeiras defence.

The Brazilians have probably had the better opportunities but lacked a cutting edge in the final third themselves.

5:18PM

45+2 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Thiago Silva in acres of space about 35 yards out - and he saunters forward then decides to have a crack at goal.

The centre-half's dipping, swerving effort is tipped wide by Weverton at full stretch!

5:15PM

45+1 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Three minutes of added time at the end of this half.

5:13PM

42 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Palmeiras have six men strung along the length of their 18-yard box in a sign of just how difficult it is going to be to break them down.

A chipped ball in towards Havertz comes to nothing. Not sure that is the route to success for the European champions.

5:11PM

39 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Sloppy from Kovacic, who is dispossessed by Raphael Veiga in his own half.

The Palmeiras midfielder then feeds Rony, who strides forward... and blasts a 25-yard strike into Row Z.

5:06PM

33 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Good stuff from Chelsea. Kante flicks a lovely ball in behind for Pulisic who scampers forward and looks to pick out Havertz.

But a Palmeiras defender manages to get a foot in to divert the ball back to goalkeeper Weverton who defuses the threat.

5:02PM

Chelsea substitution

Mount coming off to be replaced by Pulisic. It must be an injury for the England midfielder but there was nothing obvious - more to come on that one.

5:01PM

27 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Dudu should do (do) better! Ze Rafael slips a ball in behind for the lively forward but he scuffs his attempt well wide under pressure from Azpilicueta.

A couple of warning signs for Chelsea in the last five minutes.

4:57PM

25 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Now a decent chance for Chelsea - Havertz finds himself in a bit of space on the edge of the box but drags his shot horribly wide.

4:56PM

23 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Palmeiras go close! Lovely control and a bit of trickery from Dudu on the left flank, who takes a beautiful touch then jinks inside before unleashing a right-footed strike which flies just over the bar.

4:52PM

20 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

All very patient from Chelsea, perhaps a little too patient in fact.

Palmeiras are still happy to sit back and encourage Tuchel's side on to them - and Chelsea are lacking a bit of creative spark so far.

A fairly pedestrian first 20 minutes to the final, in all honesty.

Not much to shout about for Thomas Tuchel so far
Not much to shout about for Thomas Tuchel so far

4:47PM

14 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Decent chance from a free-kick for Chelsea after Lukaku is brought down about 25 yards out.

Mount steps up and goes for goal, but his effort flies a yard or so wide of Weverton's left-hand post - the keeper didn't look particularly threatened either.

Lukaku seems a bit miffed that Mount opted for a shot instead of a cross.

4:41PM

10 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Palmeiras' first shot in anger... and it ends up going out for a throw in.

Rony cuts in from the right edge of the box and skews his left-footed strike miles wide.

4:39PM

9 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Great atmosphere but not much to shout about on the pitch so far.

Palmeiras look well organised and are allowing the Chelsea defenders plenty of time on the ball before snapping into tackles when play approaches their defending third.

4:36PM

5 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Sounds like the Palmeiras fans are creating a cracking atmosphere in Abu Dhabi - cries of PALMEEEIRRRASSS haven't stopped since kick-off.

As for their team, they seem happy enough to sit in and try to catch Chelsea on the break.

4:33PM

2 min Chelsea 0 Palmeiras 0

Hudson-Odoi whips in cross towards Lukaku and it causes chaos in the Palmeiras box - two defenders fall over and then keeper Weverton races off his line but fails to claim the ball.

Pulisic's attempted cross is blocked and the opportunity disappears for Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel speaks

And he's glad to be back with his team after a spell managing remotely following a positive Covid test.

'It is difficult as a coach if you cannot be with your team in a competition like this.

'You never know if you will play this competition one more time, but it was the moment to trust the players and trust my coaching staff and my assistants. This is what we did.

'We were in contact but it's never the same, so I'm happy I could be here now. It will be kind of an away game but it's not a problem. The players are used to this.

'Palmeiras are a high individual quality team. They are used to defending, they can do it relentlessly. They maybe have an Atletico Madrid style of playing. They can hurt you any second in transition.

'We are here to win it, we will not hide from the fact we are not happy to just be in the final. This is what we are here for.'

Chelsea make four changes

Good afternoon

And welcome to our live coverage of Chelsea vs Palmeiras in the Club World Cup final, which kicks off at 4.30pm.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has joined up with his team in Abu Dhabi ahead of the final after testing negative for Covid-19, the Premier League club said on Friday.

Tuchel, who tested positive last week, was forced out to sit out Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup as well as a 1-0 Club World Cup semi-final win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal on Wednesday.

“Our head coach ... was able to fly out to the United Arab Emirates on Friday, having been cleared to travel after following protocol and providing a negative test result,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“He has now joined his players and staff, arriving at Chelsea’s Abu Dhabi base in the evening local time, shortly after the squad’s last training session before tomorrow’s Club World Cup final.”

The European champions will face Brazilian side Palmeiras in the final on Saturday in the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Palmeiras are back-to-back Copa Libertadores champions, having beaten Flamengo in November's final. They have also never won this trophy so a new first-time club world champion will be crowned later this afternoon.

Ahead of the game, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho said: “Anything I can seek to give me motivation and to help me and try to fight is what I will use.

'We have been trying to talk to our  Chelsea colleagues and try to show how important it is, how important this tournament is for Brazilian football. The coach showed us a video of Palmeiras leaving the country to give our players a sense of how important it is in Brazil.

“I think Chelsea, of course, can win this trophy. We just need to be focused and be humble and be prepared to work hard. It will not be an easy game. We can bring the trophy home, but it will not be easy against a difficult team.”
