Michael Emenalo was only without a job for around three weeks in the end. Having quit as technical director at Chelsea after a decade in West London, leaving a disputed legacy behind him, he has just been announced as the new sporting director at Ligue 1 champions Monaco. One aspect of his time with the Blues which has been widely praised is his work on the Chelsea academy, which despite a slow drip of first-team graduates has improved both in terms of infrastructure and competitiveness in recent times.

Knowing Chelsea’s youngsters as he does, it would make sense for Emenalo to look to his old stomping ground for new recruits he might take to Monaco. Whether on a permanent basis or on loan – with Emenalo famous for his gaming of the loan system – here are some of the Chelsea prospects who could thrive at the Stade Louis II.

Jérémie Boga

Hailing from Marseille, just a couple of hundred kilometres down the coast, there wouldn’t be much of an issue with culture shock were Jérémie Boga to move to Monaco. Still only 20 years of age, Boga made 27 appearances on loan with Granada last season and 31 with Rennes the season before that.

With considerable Ligue 1 experience – Rennes finished an impressive 8th during his time there – the aspiring midfielder would have little problem acclimatising to French football. Having made his Chelsea debut earlier this term and his first international appearance for the Ivory Coast, he is currently on loan at Birmingham where he scored an absolute screamer this weekend.

(He’s also nicknamed ‘The Boga Man’, which is fantastic.)

Charly Musonda

Charly Musonda clearly isn’t fazed by the idea of moving countries. Having spent 10 years at the Anderlecht academy in his native Belgium, Musonda moved to Chelsea in 2012 and has established himself as one of their most exciting youth prospects since.

Two half-seasons on loan at Real Betis has blooded Musonda in senior football, even if his second spell in La Liga was terminated early on account of a lack of playing time. Only 21, a move to Monaco would be a massive step up for him, but having scored his first Chelsea goal in September he seems to be on an upwards trajectory.

Kurt Zouma

He may not be a product of the Chelsea academy, but Zouma is still one of their most gifted youngsters. Not only has he made over 70 appearances for the Blues and picked up two Premier League winners’ medals since signing from Saint-Étienne in 2014, he has made two senior appearances for France and is widely lauded for his technique and athleticism.

It would be a huge coup for Emenalo and Monaco to sign Zouma in any capacity, but having been loaned out to Stoke this season the 23-year-old may still be available next term. Despite signing a new six-year deal before heading to the Potteries it is unclear whether Zouma will be a regular starter in 2018-19, and a spell with a club in contention for silverware and Champions League football could be productive for all involved.

Marco van Ginkel

Having come through the academy at Vitesse Arnhem and made over 100 appearances for the Eredivisie club by the age of 20, Marco van Ginkel arrived at Chelsea to much fanfare in 2013.

It hasn’t been an easy ride for the Dutch midfielder in West London, with only a handful of appearances for the Blues and middling loans at Milan and Stoke under his belt. Having spent the last few seasons on loan at PSV Eindhoven, however, Van Ginkel looks ready to kick on after scoring 22 league goals in only 39 appearances for PSV.

Emenalo clearly recognised his talent when Chelsea made a move for him first time around – could he do the same again?
