Bad nights have been common for Everton fans since the Premier League era began. Some nights though are worse than others, this was embarrassing.

The result was bad enough, as Everton are failing badly in Europe. One point from three games means that Everton are in a terrible position in the group and more than likely need to win each of our next three matches in the group. That seems extremely unlikely. The European adventure will be a very brief one.

In the first half, the crowd was mute. There wasn’t the boos and jeers associated with the Martinez era, instead there was just stony miserable silence. It was like the fans had given up on ever seeing a good performance from the team.

The team played better than in recent games, but mistakes were still there. Basic defending errors were on show for both of their goals, it was nowhere near good enough.

In the second half the crowd was sparked into life by a moment of madness from Ashley Williams. He barged the goalkeeper out of play. That was a yellow in itself, but what ensued was a scuffle that should have seen him sent off.

In many respects, it was nice to see some fight from the Everton players; just it shouldn’t be a literal fight. Williams went on to score the equaliser and that seemed to be the break we needed. But it wasn’t to be.

The fighting

The scuffle was the main talking point of the night, as Everton fans got involved including one man who was carrying his child. It was an embarrassing sight and one that makes you cringe as an Evertonian.

Someone wanted to show me a video of this “man fighting while holding a child” that she’d seen on Facebook. “Have you seen it?” she said, not knowing where the clip was from. I ashamedly admitted that I had, and that it was a fan of the club I love.

It’s the kind of thing that drags the clubs name through mud and gets the club fined. The fan has deservedly got a ban for life and it’s a horrible thing to see. I can only hope any sanction from UEFA isn’t too severe.

It was another embarrassing chapter in an embarrassing season. Everton could do without unwanted press right now. Maybe Ronald Koeman will be thankful that the papers are talking about something else, rather than his own ineptitude.

That fan exited out of the stadium for the last time. Everton are soon to exit out of Europe. And hopefully Koeman will shown the exit soon.
