FA 'strongly condemns' England fans as violence erupts in Portugal

The Football Association has strongly condemned the violence which erupted in the Portuguese city of Porto ahead of England’s Nations League match against the Netherlands on Thursday.

Riot police charged England fans on Wednesday after bottles were thrown into a fan zone screening Portugal’s match against Switzerland.

The Guardian reported some fans had sung songs like “F**k the Pope and the IRA” and “10 German Bombers” while forcing the closure of local roads, behaviour British police branded as “completely unacceptable.”

“The FA strongly condemns the scenes witnessed in Porto overnight,” read a statement released early Thursday. “Anyone responsible for these disturbances cannot be seen as true England supporters and are not welcome in football.

“They are an embarrassment to the team and the thousands of well-behaved fans who follow England in the right way. We are liaising with UK Football Policing Unit.”

An estimated 18,000 England fans are thought to have travelled to Portugal for the culmination of the Nations League.

In a bid to curb antisocial behaviour, the FA recently launched its ‘Don’t Be That Idiot’ campaign which included a message from England manager Gareth Southgate.

It was an attempt to tackle what it described as a “stag-do culture” among England fans “where young guys get together and suddenly anything goes.”

But it would seem those pleas have fallen on deaf ears. England play in Guimaraes on Thursday, with many fans choosing to stay in Porto which is approximately 30 miles south.

“This is the second evening in a row where disorder has occurred in Porto,” said deputy chief constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs’ Council football policing lead.

“Last night there were issues outside a bar, where bottles were thrown and minor damage was caused. It is completely unacceptable.

“The behaviour of a small number of the England fans out here continues to tarnish the reputation of the genuine fans who are simply trying to enjoy the football.”
