Kylian Mbappe is in his final days as a Paris Saint-Germain player. He has had his last game, his true farewell. He has scored his last goal for the club and lifted his last trophy in their colours.

For the next month he will be a PSG player by name but that is all. All roads lead towards him joining Real Madrid later this summer.

The 25-year-old has been inseparable from Los Blancos for so long but the protracted saga is coming to an end. Everyone expects him to be walking out at Santiago Bernabeu in the next few months, doing kick-ups at the grand old stadium and wearing the famous white jersey.

He has kept us on our toes the whole way though. From signing an extension in Paris despite being seemingly on the verge of finally moving to Madrid two years ago, to declining the extension in his contract that would see him remain at Parc des Princes past the end of this month.

Mbappe is an enigma. Mbappe is a game himself. He is a world power and not just because of his footballing ability. He is a World Cup winner, Golden Boot winner, global brand, and mega superstar. He has been remarkably linked with Arsenal throughout.

Mikel Arteta has spoken about signing him, Arsene Wenger courted him as a youngster, and up until his final hours as a PSG player, there will be people that still hope, somehow, the Gunners can pull off something incredible. Ahead of the Champions League final and the only thing stopping an announcement over his future being made public, here is every reason why Arsenal are right to believe.

Shaking hands with Arteta

Only earlier this week Mbappe was seen at the KAFD Globe Soccer Awards Europe meeting with Arteta. The pair shook hands, shared a small word in front of the cameras, and then conspiracy theories over why this would be flooded the internet.

Arteta stance

Speaking earlier this year when asked about Mbappe Arteta went a step further. After the PSG man entered the final six months of his contract and was free to speak to clubs across Europe about a possible pre-contract agreement, the Arsenal boss threw his side in the ring.

"Why not?" he said when quizzed on if Arsenal should be in the mix to sign Mbappe. "If we want to be the best team, we are going to need the best talent and the best players, that is for sure."

Wenger admission

As a fellow Frenchman, Wenger was keen to snap up Mbappe before he became a modern sensation. "You know at one point I tried to convince him to come to Arsenal," he admitted in a BBC documentary about Mbappe. "I was at his home with his parents. He was a happy boy. He just wanted to play football and had the passion for the game."

Former scout Giles Grimandi also opened up on the attempts. "We met his parents in London who came to the training ground and alongside Arsene and Richard Law [then transfer chief] we travelled to meet Kylian in the South of France.

"We tried, and I really don't think we were far from getting him, but he declined the project and signed a new deal with Monaco. I'd say it is probably the biggest disappointment in my 15 years as an Arsenal scout, not convincing Kylian Mbappe to sign for the club."

IShowSpeed 'confirmation'

Perhaps the most tenuous of all the links. YouTuber IShowSpeed claimed that despite watching a stream of transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting on Mbappe moving to Madrid, it was Arsenal that would get the player.

"He's not going to Real Madrid, he's not going. I promise you," Speed said. "Don't ask me how I know but he's not going. Trust me. I've got the real insight. Trust me."

He continued: "I'm going to tell you all where he is going. Don't ask me how I know, but watch how he doesn't go [to] Real Madrid. And he's going [to] Arsenal. You only heard it from me, you only heard it from me."

Konate rules out Liverpool

When Liverpool defender, and France teammate for Mbappe, ruled out a move to Anfield it sparked the possibility that Arsenal could take advantage. "Obviously, I'm not involved in that, but I can tell you I'd be surprised if all the top clubs were [in for him]," he said. "The top clubs I know, for most of them, it will be tricky - wages, signing-on fee."

More of Wenger

Even earlier than the documentary, Wenger opened up on failing to sign Mbappe in 2017. “We were on the case last year and he was close to joining us," he said at the time. "For 10 per cent of the players, they can go where they want & they will make a great career - for me he’s in the 10 per cent.

"He could close his eyes and choose Real Madrid, Arsenal or Manchester United and he will have a great career because he is an exceptional player."

Kroenke opens up

Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke was even asked about Mbappe's future. Last summer he explained his thoughts on a possible move to Saudi Arabia for the player.

"I've had Middle Eastern people of prominence involved in teams ask me, and I like them by the way, they're great guys," he said. "Manchester City are great people but they just do things differently because they have a whole lot of money and they've asked me, 'do you think we could ever run our leagues over here like you do in the US?'

"They think about it, that's an outlier, I understand that [Kylian] Mbappe is not wanting to do that, I doubt that he will."

Mbappe on Wenger

The other way round this time. "Yes, I met with Arsene Wenger, who is a great coach," Mbappe has said of the Arsenal great. "He has a great reputation here in France, he's well-respected and knows how to develop young players. This was a real option for me.

"But, of course, Paris Saint-Germain was the main option. We weighed up the advantages and disadvantages of all the clubs but my family told me it had to be my decision and one I needed to make. It also had to be a long-term decision. So it was up to me and I decided to come here in order to develop."

Sagna advice

Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna told Lord Ping that he was keen on Mbappe moving to north London. "I would love to see Kylian Mbappe playing for Arsenal!," he said.

"I think that transfer is almost impossible, but it would be crazy. Can you imagine Kylian Mbappe playing for Arsenal? I think he will be a very expensive transaction for Arsenal, but he would be such an amazing signing.

"Because of his age, he would get along with all of Arsenal's younger players and the crowd at the Emirates Stadium would love him. He would be a great addition to the Premier League. I can see him in the red and white of Arsenal – he would look good in that jersey – but I think he will go to Real Madrid."

Mbappe playing down rumours

When the player himself speaks it gained a lot of attention. Although the expectation of joining Madrid was always there, Mbappe stirred the pot for Arsenal supporters during the season. “I haven’t made any decision on my future," he said in January. "I didn’t make a choice. Nobody talks about my situation inside the club, it’s not a topic."
