Everything Jurgen Klopp has said about Arne Slot as Liverpool close in on successor

Jurgen Klopp looks on during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Liverpool FC at London Stadium.

Liverpool are closing in on a successor for Jurgen Klopp with Feyenoord manager Arne Slot looking to be the next man to take charge of the club.

Klopp announced earlier in the season that he would be stepping down from his role at the end of the current campaign. Liverpool have since been on the lookout for a first new manager in nine years.

It seems that Slot is the man to take that role, with Liverpool reaching an agreement with Feyenoord over a compensation fee over the weekend. The manager has been with the Dutch side since 2021, but outlined his desire to join Liverpool at the end of last week.

Amid all the news about Slot coming in to replace him, there’s no surprise that Klopp was asked about him ahead of the weekend’s Premier League match against West Ham. The current Liverpool boss was full of praise for his potential successor.

“I am not involved in the process, just to clarify that,” he said on Friday. “I like a lot about it, if he is the one, he wants to take the job. He is desperate. ‘Come on, let’s go for it. Excited.’

“I like the way his team play football. All the things I hear about him as a guy, a good guy. Some people I know, know him, I don’t know him yet. Some people tell me that he is a really good guy. I like that a lot.

“Good coach, good guy. I am looking forward for the club if he is the solution or the man. I’m more than happy. It’s not up to me to judge these things but it all sounds really good to me.

“It is the best job in the world, best club in the world, best job in the world. Obviously now I even help by not finishing on a high, it looks like. There is space for improvement. Great job, great team, fantastic people. He ‘would’ take a really, really interesting job.”

The press conference took place before the news of an agreement being reached broke. So, he was again asked about Slot following the draw at the London Stadium. Klopp offered some more thoughts when speaking to Match of the Day on Saturday afternoon.

"If I don't know a manager personally I can only touch the subject from watching their team and the way they play football," he said. "Feyenoord are a really, really good football team, and he is definitely a really good manager.

"I am happy for the club if it happens. I don't know it for sure. It is not too important if I am happy, other people make the decisions and they will do it right, so I am happy."
