EXCLUSIVE: RAMON VEGA - 'Abrasive man-management style caused Mourinho's demise'

Yahoo's Sport Business Correspondent Ramon Vega looks at Jose Mourinho's confrontational man-management style and contends that like in the world of finance, this belongs in the past.

It wasn’t meant to be like this for the ‘Special One’.

As Chelsea’s players cavorted with the league trophy in May, no one could possibly have imagined that just a few months later Jose Mourinho would be leaving the club as they hover precariously above the relegation zone.

It is an incredible story, one of the most gravity-defying falls from grace in years.

At the heart of Mourinho’s demise is the alleged discord that existed between the manager and a group of his players.

It seemed as if he had lost the dressing room and once that happens you can never win the players back.

I have to say that, although key players have consistently and woefully underperformed this season, I was taken aback by Mourinho’s abrasive style towards them.

It has always been said that Mourinho’s favoured tactic is the keep the limelight focused on him so that his players are left in peace.

Instead, Mourinho effectively hung them out to dry with post match comments, such as the ones after the Leicester defeat when he accused them of “betraying” his work.

That sort of thing would not have gone down well at all with the players.

Similarly, in the finance world a leader needs to inspire enduring loyalty and so such a confrontational approach would be ill-advised.

When you have people working for you in a highly pressurised environment where you need them to always give their all and work in an extremely dedicated and thorough fashion, what good can come from turning against them?

They are the ones who can help define your career so they should be treated with respect- that will in turn engender reciprocal respect.

Of course, there are times when a firm hand is required and people are made aware of the high standards expected of them.

But the key skill for a manager- whether that’s in a football or financial context- is the ability to get the best out of those that work for you and possessing the dexterity and creativity to apply different strategies in different circumstances, especially when things are going against you.

Mourinho failed to do that this season. There are those who will argue that his track record meant that he deserved more time.

However, the huge money that is now at stake in competitions such as the Premier league and Champions League ensures that time is a luxury that can no longer be afforded to the vast majority of managers, no matter how ‘Special’ your status might be.

Football is the ‘Beautiful Game’, but it can be a ruthless, cruel one too. If Mourinho wasn’t aware of that before, he certainly will be now.
