Gossip: De Gea 'agrees new five-year Man Utd deal', Bale 'wants to stay at Lopetegui's Real Madrid'

One could almost have forgotten, as Cristiano Ronaldo hogged the headlines and the goals with his World Cup masterclass in Sochi last night, that David de Gea had just done the least David de Gea-like thing that David de Gea has ever done.

But we can’t quite forget it, and nor could De Gea himself as he endured a restless night in his hotel room during which he was visited by Robert Green’s ghost. The floating, flapping apparition warning him that some people can never forgive horrendous goalkeeping errors in the opening match of a World Cup, and that if he’s not careful he could end up at QPR.

It’s enough to terrify anyone – so perhaps it’s no surprise to learn today that Spain’s number one has finally agreed to sign a new five-year contract at Manchester United.

The Manchester Evening News has the scoop, claiming that De Gea will “end constant talk of a move to Real Madrid” by committing his future to Old Trafford.

Even if English ghosts weren’t enough to scare him into it, Luis Rubiales would be. The last man who negotiated a move the Bernabeu under the Spanish FA chief’s watch got sacked the next day.

So De Gea is quitting while he’s ahead and staying put, although he hasn’t actually signed the five-year contract yet so he could still change his mind once his World Cup is over (which could be quite soon if he keeps letting pea rollers trickle through his grasp).

Bale wants to work with Lopetegui

The news is less positive on Gareth Bale, from a United perspective anyway. ESPN reports that the Welsh forward – who looked set to quit Real for the Premier League after falling out with previous manager Zinedine Zidane – now wants to remain in Spain and work under new head coach Julen Lopetegui. Unless, of course, Lopetegui doesn’t pick him either.

There is good news and bad news for Chelsea, and we’ll start – as it traditional – with the bad. N’Golo Kante is again being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain – the Mirror reporting that the French champions are ready to pay £90m for the Blues’ most important midfielder.

On the plus side, the west Londoners appear to be edging closer to appointing a new manager, with the Independent claiming that Maurizio Sarri’s agent will be speaking to Napoli this weekend to “reach an agreement” over the 59-year-old’s departure. Sarri is currently sharing a desk with Carlo Ancelotti in Naples and it’s getting a bit tight.

Better still for Blues fans, the Sun says Sarri could bring Stamford Bridge legend Gianfranco Zola back to the club as his assistant.

Elsewhere, Newcastle and Leicester are battling to sign Crystal Palace’s £20m-rated English winger Andros Townsend (Guardian), Tottenham are competing with Wolves for Barcelona’s out-of-favour Portuguese midfielder Andre Silva (Sun) and Everton’s Wayne Rooney could make his debut for DC United on 14 July as his move to the USA edges closer (Mirror). Sure Wazza will be in tip-top physical shape for that.
