Gossip: Man Utd and Chelsea 'target Cavani', Man City 'join Lemar race', Liverpool 'want Rakitic'

Lemar, Cavani and Rakitic could be in the Premier League next season
Lemar, Cavani and Rakitic could be in the Premier League next season

The earliest known record of Edinson Cavani being linked with a move to the Premier League is July 2008, when West Ham allegedly made a bid for the then-Palermo striker, although some historians suggest the Uruguayan has been tipped to sign for an English club since the Middle Ages.

Since that time, there have been approximately 12,850 tabloid stories suggesting that Edinson is on his way to the Prem, yet the only clubs he has signed for are Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain.

Still, one of those Premier League stories has to be correct eventually, right? So why not today’s in the Mirror?

The paper alleges that Cavani – now 31 years old, rich beyond his wildest dreams and forever grateful that he didn’t end up at West Ham – will be a summer target for Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Alice band-wearing goal machine no longer “feels at home” at the Parc des Princes, especially since Neymar was nasty to him earlier in the season and tried to steal all his penalties, and is open to a transfer.

The Ligue 1 leaders will reportedly consider letting him leave for £53m, which is about five times’ the amount the Hammers could have signed him for 10 years ago. But it’s OK, because they had Carlton Cole at his peak instead.

Man City alarm rivals with Lemar bid

Manchester City are flexing their transfer market muscle once again by wading into the race to sign Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.

The Telegraph says Pep Guardiola’s side will “land another blow on their Premier League rivals” – Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been tracking Lemar – by “jumping to the front of the queue” to sign the French winger.

The 22-year-old is expected to leave Monaco this summer to “the highest bidder”, which normally tends to be City if they want someone enough (unless PSG want them more).

The signing of Lemar would apparently heighten fears among top six clubs that the runaway league leaders will be “uncatchable for a number of years”. Eek.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are pondering a summer move for Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos, described by the Mirror as a “big-name defender” although it’s not completely clear whether they were intentionally trying to be funny.

United have reportedly watched the 29-year-old Greek centre-back “several times” in recent weeks and could sign him for £20m as a “much more achievable target” than Toby Alderweireld. There’s a reason for that.

Elsewhere, Juventus are “confident” of signing Arsenal’s unsettled right-back Hector Bellerin this summer (Mirror), Liverpool want to replace Philippe Coutinho with his Barcelona team-mate Ivan Rakitic (Don Balon) and West Ham are interested in Trabzonspor’s 23-year-old midfielder Okay Yokuslu (AS). Is he any good? He’s Okay.
