Gossip: Man Utd 'want £79m Douglas Costa', Pochettino's four Tottenham targets revealed, Arsenal 'chase Roma starlet'

Costa, De Ligt and Martial – big name targets
Costa, De Ligt and Martial – big name targets

Quickfire quiz. Ready?

1) Name a famous person called Douglas.

2) Name a cool person you know called Douglas.

3) Name a cool person called Douglas who you don’t know personally, but have heard about.

4) Name a person called Douglas who you would consider sexually attractive.

That’s the end of the quiz. Tough, right? And what it teaches us is that Douglas is not a very exciting name in 2018. The sexiest it got was when Michael Douglas was treated for sex addiction, which isn’t a great claim to fame.

But what about the name “Glas”? That’s pretty cool. Glas.

And today, people called Douglas can thank The Sun for providing a new way of looking at themselves, the tabloid having stretched this boring old name to its limits to create the headline “Glas Ceiling”. A reference to the world’s greatest living Douglas – Douglas Costa.

Manchester United like him anyway. The Red Devils are reportedly ready to pay £79m for the Bayern Munich winger, who has sparkled on loan at Juventus this season.

The Italian champions like Glas too, but they are “desperate to strengthen in other areas” (seven league titles in a row aren’t good enough for some people) and may prioritise central midfielders instead.

Helpfully, the Sun tells us there is a “40 per cent chance” that Costa will end up at Old Trafford, which means this article has about 35 per cent more credibility than most stories you read in the Sun.

Tottenham target Martial, De Ligt and Sessegnon

Mauricio Pochettino will celebrate signing a new contact at Tottenham by going shopping for a string of starlets. The Mirror says the Argentine will target Man Utd’s Anthony Martial, 22, Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, 18, and Fulham winger Ryan Sessegnon, 18, while the Mail says Poch will renew attempts to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, a relative veteran at 25.

After penning a five-year deal, Pochettino has demanded “at least £100m” to spend on new players, while the club will also raise funds by offloading the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose, Mousa Dembele and Fernando Llorente. Spurs are definitely ageist.

Arsenal’s new manager is planning some shopping too. Sky Sports says Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini could be one of Unai Emery’s first signings at the Emirates. The 21-year-old has a £27m release clause although he is also wanted by Juventus.

Meanwhile, one-time Gunners target Nabil Fekir looks set to seal a £60m move to Liverpool after the Champions League final. The Mirror says the Lyon playmaker, who appeared to say a tearful goodbye to the French club’s fans in his last match, has been identified by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp as the man to replace Philippe Coutinho.

Elsewhere, German midfielder Emre Can is set to leave Anfield for Juventus on a free transfer “within 10 days” (Gazzetta dello Sport), Frank Lampard has held talks with Derby County about becoming the Rams’ new manager (Mirror) and fellow West Ham legend Slaven Bilic is in line to become the new boss of China’s national side (Sun). His first move will be to re-nationalise Joe Hart as a Chinese citizen.
