Gossip: United and City 'battle for £60m midfielder', Arsenal 'demand £30m for Alexis', Ancelotti 'lined up by Chelsea'

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Alexis Sanchez and Carlo Ancelotti – new clubs in the offing?
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Alexis Sanchez and Carlo Ancelotti – new clubs in the offing?

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a name that not many English football fans had heard of this time last year, and even fewer of them could spell. But today it is name that is being whispered – almost certainly with shockingly bad pronunciation -within the corridors of power at Manchester’s two great football institutions.

United and City both reportedly want to sign the 22-year-old Serbian midfielder, whose name we will abbreviate for the sake of convenience to SMS – like if we were talking about text messages in 2001.

The Mirror says Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola have taken a fancy to the Lazio starlet, who is rated at “around £60m” after a string of impressive displays for the Italian club. Imagine how much he’d be worth if he’d actually been capped by Serbia yet.

“I can’t rule out him leaving,” said his agent, the former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman. We can probably assume he won’t be advised to go to Stamford Bridge based on Kezman’s underwhelming stint in west London in the mid-2000s.

Annual Gunners Mayhem

Arsenal are prepared to drive a hard bargain as they contemplate selling Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City, says the Sun. Unfortunately for Gunners fans, a hard bargain in this instance consists of demanding half the amount of money City offered for the Chilean two months ago.

Arsene Wenger will reportedly insist that City pay £30m for his best player and is “refusing to budge” on the price. Apart from the £30m he has knocked off the price since August, obviously.

Most of the papers seem greatly interested in Arsenal’s AGM, which took place yesterday. The Sun thinks it’s funny that Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis claimed the club had “over-performed” this year, and for once we have to agree with the Sun.

Meanwhile, the Mirror has picked up on the fact that Wenger revealed he might leave the Emirates at the end of the season by saying his position will be “reviewed” in May. But then, Mauricio Pochettino might also leave Spurs if they lose all their games between now and the end of the season.

In slightly more interesting manager gossip, the Sun says unemployed Super Gaffer Carlo Ancelotti is “standing by” for a sensational return to Chelsea.

The Italian is apparently the club’s “first choice” to replace his compatriot Antonio Conte, should the current Blues boss get fed up with the constant reports about him being fed up and decide to leave.

Elsewhere, Man Utd and Arsenal have made approaches to sign Barcelona’s 22-year-old winger Jose Arnaiz, who has a £17.8m release clause in his contract (Metro), Brighton will face competition from Sevilla for Monaco’s former Man City striker Stefan Jovetic (Talksport) and Liverpool want “at least €150m” from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho (Mundo Deportivo), which is £133m at the current exchange rate but could be £233m by the summer based on recent Brexit negotiations.
