Hugo Lloris will retain Tottenham captaincy despite drink-driving conviction, says Maurico Pochettino

The Tottenham Hotspur manager Maurico Pochettino says that Hugo Lloris has told him he will accept the sanction of the club’s choosing over his conviction for drink-driving – but that he will retain the captaincy.

France’s World Cup winning goalkeeper was found guilty this week of being more than twice over the drink-driving limit when police officers pulled him over in Marylebone, London at 2am on Aug 24. He was fined £50,000 and banned from driving for 20 months by Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday and will also be punished by the club.

Lloris will not play against Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday – the club say that their captain and goalkeeper sustained a thigh injury in the win over Manchester United two weeks ago and will not be available for several weeks. They will also be without Dele who was injured during England’s Nations League game against Spain and is expected to be out for more than just this weekend’s game.

Asked whether Lloris would retain the captaincy when he returns to action, Pochettino said “of course”. The Spurs manager said that Loris was regretful about the offence and also the details divulged in court, that Lloris had vomited in his own car, and was so intoxicated that he had to be helped out when he was stopped by officers. He had been heading in the direction of parked cars and had jumped a red light.

Pochettino said: “Of course he is the first to regret about everything. All that happened yesterday [in court] is not good and of course he doesn’t feel great. He said that he was guilty of this situation and he’s responsible. He’s a man. But I think most important is everyone can make a mistake. He made a mistake and he’s suffered the punishment that the society [demands]. He has punished himself.

“We are not God, we can’t judge people. Only we need to try [to ensure] that he understands and he understands that it was a mistake. Then [we must accept] we are men and women and or course we can all make a mistake. That’s a massive lesson for everyone. For him it’s the first. He said ‘Gaffer it’s a massive lesson for me. I made a mistake and now I need to pay’. Like a man that he is, he is going to accept everything.”
