Kew Gardens gave Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore back-to-back victories in the St Leger after powering to victory in the final English Classic of the season at Doncaster.

The 3/1 winner was representing the same stable that send out Capri to win the Group 1 contest last year and Moore gave him every chance, hitting the front from two furlongs out before staying on strongly to the line.

Favourites have a poor recent record in this extended 1m6f event and 7/4 market leader Lah Ti Dar, having only her fourth start but in receipt of the fillies’ 3lb allowance, was a little green as she attempted to run down Kew Gardens.

She could never get in a telling blow and was two-and-a-quarter-lengths adrift at the finish.

Southern France (20/1), a stablemate of the winner, stuck on well for third.

Moore told ITV Racing: “It was very smooth. He’s a very uncomplicated horse and he tries very hard. He’s got a great attitude to life and picked up really well. He’s a super horse.”

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is a possible landing spot for Kew Gardens, and GentingBet clipped the son of Galileo to a best-priced 14-1, with Lah Ti Dah out to 20-1. Enable remains the 11/8 favourite for Europe’s middle-distance championship.
