Liverpool Fan View: Three key battles the Reds must win to claim derby victory

Liverpool will host their bitter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday.

Salah v Williams

Mohamed Salah ended his one-game goal drought with Liverpool’s seventh in a 7-0 win against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Egypt international has scored 12 goals in 15 games in the Premier League. His pace has added another dimension to Jurgen Klopp’s team and taken the pressure of Sadio Mane. Salah has wasted no time striking up a devastating understanding with Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mane. The summer signing was a tad wasteful in front of goal at the start of the season. His finishing can’t be faulted now. Salah will come up against an Everton defence that has conceded 28 goals in 15 games. Klopp will be hoping Salah, in tandem with Mane, can exploit the lack of pace in the Toffees back four. With Everton defender Ashley Williams out of form, Salah could help Liverpool FC ease to a resounding derby day win.

Henderson v Rooney

Jordan Henderson was rested for Liverpool’s 7-0 Champions League win mid-week. However, the captain is expected to return to Klopp’s starting line-up for the Merseyside derby. While Henderson’s work ethic can’t be faulted, the England international’s eagerness to press can leave his back four exposed. Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will relish the chance to get on the score sheet at Anfield. The 31-year-old has the experience and the nous to give Henderson a headache. Rooney will look to drift into dangerous positions in front of Liverpool’s back four and pick holes in Klopp’s fragile defence. Henderson will need to be disciplined to limit Rooney’s influence on the derby.

Coutinho v Gueye

While Salah has been Liverpool’s player of the season so far, Coutinho has been scintillating over the past week or so. The Brazil international scored twice in a 5-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend. He followed up that performance with his first Liverpool FC hat-trick in their 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow. Coutinho scored in their 3-1 win against Everton last season and he will be hoping to continue that record on Sunday. Holding midfielder Idrissa Gueye will be tasked with marshalling the Liverpool number 10. Klopp could use Coutinho as part of his front free, or give the South American a deeper midfield role. The Brazilian’s positional flexibility will prevent Sam Allardyce from finalising a masterplan to stop Klopp’s chief architect.
