Manchester City added yet another string to their bow on Saturday with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sean Dyche’s Burnley. Pep Guardiola’s men extended their unbeaten start to the season to nine Premier League games on a historic day at the Etihad Stadium.

Another type of victory

We’ve seen City earn positive results in all manner of ways already this season. There’s been high scoring victories, gutsy stoppage time wins and draws earned despite having a man less than the opposition.

There’s a tired question leveled at talented teams perceived as being a bit too fancy; “Can they do it on a wet and windy day at Stoke?” Well, it might have been a home game and it might have been Burnley instead, but the Blues still went some way to answering that question.

The weather conditions in Manchester were the very definition of wet and windy, and Burnley were as committed and plucky as anybody City have faced this term. Yet despite having to wait until deep into the second half to wrap it all up, Pep’s men were still commanding and good value for their win.

Burnley were effective in getting into City’s faces and closing down space quickly. They did that better than most opponents so far and it took a Sergio Agüero penalty, earned by Bernardo Silva, to break the deadlock.

From there, City couldn’t register again until the 73rd minute, when Nicolas Otamendi scored with a header. The Argentine defender has come good this season; important goals are just the latest facet to his vastly improved game. Finally, Leroy Sané concluded the scoring just two minutes later. It was a sweet tonic for a player berated as a cheat all game by a bizarre Burnley following who had no reason to make that assertion.

History made twice…and there’s more to come

Sergio Agüero grabbed the headlines when he scored from the spot; his goal was the 177th he has scored for the club. That draws him level with Eric Brooks as City’s all-time top scorer. He’s got to that total in 263 matches, which is 236 fewer games than it took Brooks 78 years ago.

It is inevitable that Agüero will move out on his own as top scorer soon. It could even come as soon as Tuesday night when City host Wolves in the League Cup. Hopefully, the chance to witness history will pull the crowds in.

There could be another all time record broken on the night. Saturday’s win over Burnley was the Blues 11th consecutive victory in all competitions, equaling the current record. If they can make it 12 on Tuesday, that’s another record that will tumble.

With 42 goals in 13 games this term and yet to taste defeat, there is no reason City shouldn’t be looking to significantly improve on that record. Wolves are just the next team that have to work out to stop Pep’s men. As everybody else is finding out, that’s much easier said than done.
