Michael Edwards and his new-look recruitment team at Liverpool may be left disappointed as two rumored targets in Serie A may end up being used in a swap deal - taking them both off the market.

Having been appointed by the Reds' owners FSG as their new chief executive of football, the ex-Anfield sporting director has already installed Richard Hughes in his former role at the club. Together the pair will be tasked with working alongside incoming head coach Arne Slot to sign the players who will usher in a new era on Merseyside.

Among those who have been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in recent years is the Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, with the versatile star attracting interest from a host of European giants this summer. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Reds may have a battle on their hands from Juventus.

The 21-time Netherlands international was among the most impressive players in his position in Italy last term, contributing 12 goals and three assists in 32 outings in the league. The 26-year-old has three years left on his current contract with the Bergamo-based club and is valued at $54 million (£42m/€50m) by TransferMarkt.

Having been a focal player in his team's success in the Europa League last season, it appears that the Dutchman is open to potentially embracing a new challenge in the future. Back in March, he told De Telegraaf: "I have indicated to Atalanta that I want to make a move next summer. But there must be something very nice to exchange that for Atalanta.

"My girlfriend and I are having a great time in Italy, but I can put up with the rain for some clubs in England," he joked, in a promising indication for Anfield chiefs. "I hope there will be great options that I can think about. And then I hope that Atalanta receives a nice amount for me, because I had a wonderful time there."

Moreover, after Atalanta closed out a historic win in the Europa League final versus Bayer Leverkusen last term, he hinted further at a potential move, telling Sky Italia, via Football Italia: "I’m only happy to enjoy this title with the fans, I’m focused on celebrating. Next season? I don’t know. We will see."

With Juventus circling for the Holland star, any chances of Liverpool landing their rumored target could be complicated further, with the Turin giants also potentially planning to offer another player on the Reds' radar in part exchange. The report states that Dean Huijsen could be sent the other way as a makeweight in any hypothetical deal with The Old Lady.

In the case of Huijsen, the 6ft 5in colossus is also being monitored by Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, according to Tutto Juve's Mirko Di Natale on social media. Having impressed while making 14 appearances while on loan at Roma last term, the 19-year-old Spain youth international represents a major asset for Juventus.
