Pep Guardiola: Man City Squad Will Choose Captain in Vincent Kompany's Absence

Pep Guardiola says he will task his Manchester City players with deciding who will take the captain's armband in the absence of Vincent Kompany.

According to ITV, the new City manager believes it is up to his first-team squad to determine which of them steps up to the plate if Kompany is unavailable to play.

Club captain Kompany has struggled with injuries over the past 12 months, and Guardiola wants his charges to decide among themselves who should lead the side when the centre-half is not fit to play.

Guardiola said: "Vincent is the captain and, when's he's not playing, the players have the choose.

"I don't think it's a big problem. We have people like Vincent, Joe Hart, Yaya Toure, Pablo Zabaleta as well.

"They have to decide who the real captain is for them.

"I have never believed I should pick the captain, because I am not in the locker room, not the dressing room. I'm not in the meetings when they believe they have to change something.

"They have to choose for themselves the best guy to represent their opinions. I don't like to do it, because I have only been here a month, so they must decide.

"It's their responsibility. We've only been together for a few weeks or a month, and they know each other better than me.

"It's their responsibility."

Kompany has played less than 40 matches for City in each of the last four seasons.

A calf injury kept the Belgium international out of the side for two months during the 2012/13 season, before a hamstring injury restricted him to 37 appearances in 2013/14.

The hamstring niggle returned the following campaign as Kompany featured 33 times for the three-time Premier League champions.

The 30-year-old, though, played just 22 times last term due to a troublesome calf strain - an injury which also prevented his involvement at Euro 2016 with the Belgian national side.
