Rangers Fan View: The decision-makers cannot play Russian roulette with our season

With the recent news from Rangers that the search for the new manager will go into next week, I fear the decision-makers at the club are playing Russian roulette with our season.

They have come out and said that even though it’s been two weeks since Pedro Caixinha’s sacking they haven’t interviewed anyone yet. This worries me. For a board made up of successful businessmen, in their own right, it astounds me that they have not put succession plans in place with regards to the manager. Surely they were making alternative plans after the European debacle to safeguard themselves when or if this situation arose? It appears to me they hoped Caixinha would turn it around. But by doing so they failed to do their duty and plan ahead for the ‘what if?’ scenario.

Having said that, whilst their apparent dithering is a concern, most of the names mentioned haven’t exactly filled me with any sense of real hope. I can’t say any of them have made me think ‘yeah, he’s the man for the job.’ So if that is the case, It would seem that the board are hoping, like me, that someone will apply who will blow them away and become the outstanding candidate.

Derek McInnes has been mooted as the preferred choice by most fans and most of the media. However, I certainly wouldn’t be making him the first choice. He’s done well with Aberdeen, I don’t think anyone can deny that. But as I said previously we need the best manager possible. Perhaps I am a bit of a dreamer. However, I am sure with the number of CVs that have arrived to the people who are in power, they can find someone who has more gravitas and has more of winning mentality than McInnes who will want to take the job. I don’t want the board to settle for being second best, not now, not ever. I feel McInnes would get us second spot easily but I don’t think he could win us a title. If he gets the job, however, I do hope he proves me wrong on that assumption.

But only time will tell on that one. However, I feel it’s important that the board go out and get their man before the Dundee match next Friday. Even if you are the world’s most pessimistic person, this season is far from over. I feel the new manager will need the Dundee game in the hotseat in order to prepare for the double-header against Aberdeen. Those two matches are becoming bigger as time progresses. They will make or break our season league-wise. This is not like last season. By the time they got Caixinha in the door, the season had gone; most of us had already written it off. The same cannot be allowed to happen this time around.

The new manager will have the window in January to see what he can do in terms of player recruitment. I don’t think it’s wise or proactive to leave a caretaker manager in charge of the two biggest games of the season. potentially leaving the new manager with a dead season, if results don’t go our way. It’s over to the director of football and the board to make this call, but they simply cannot afford to get it wrong. To say I am nervous is an understatement; to be frank, dealing with football matters so far hasn’t been their strong suit. I hope this time around it changes and they get it spot on. They have to.
