Rangers Fan View: Why the fans deserve some silverware this season

Sunday afternoon will be Rangers‘ fourth semi-final in the last three seasons. And, of course, the expectation is for us to win the game and reach the final as we look for our first major trophy since 2011. It’s a massive match for Pedro Caixinha, but more importantly, it’s massive for the fans.

It’s not been easy following Rangers, especially over the recent years. The demotion, the slog up through the divisions and two years being stuck in the Championship. The ‘Journey’ as it was christened was supposed to be fun. The intake of alcohol was fun, but from a few weeks in, the novelty had worn off and the reality had set in.

I felt the majority of it was really boring, mostly down to the mind-numbing football on show most weeks, but one thing was constant: the fans. Almost 50,000 every second week in the bottom two tiers of Scottish football. It’s an incredible showing of loyalty. Something I am proud and privileged to be a part of.

That leads me back to Sunday’s game. We have got 38,000 fans heading to Hampden to back the team to the hilt, while Motherwell could only sell 9,000 tickets for a national cup semi-final, which, in my opinion, is poor.

It just shows the tremendous backing the fans are giving to this club. Surely, it would give everyone a boost if we could reach the final and try and wipe away the embarrassment of losing to Hibs in the Scottish Cup final. It would be apt if we could do that by beating them in the final to lift the trophy.

In fact, the last time we lifted the League Cup was in Walter Smith’s final year. We also managed to defeat Motherwell in the semi-final. That led to us defeating Celtic 2-1 in extra time where Steven Davis and Jelavic got the goals for us. It gave us the springboard to go on and win the title.

I am not saying that it will help Caixinha’s team go on and win the league title. However, an appearance in a cup final would be excellent for this team at this stage of its development. It may give them the belief that they can go on and lift some silverware.

It would shut up a lot of the doubters if we could. Furthermore, it would give us fans the trophies we crave and get him some credit in the bank after the Progres result. It’s, without doubt, the biggest game of the season so far. It will be a tough afternoon but it’s a massive chance for us to get back to doing what the club is best known for: winning and competing for trophies.

And after everything that’s happened over the recent years, there is not a set of fans who deserve a bit of success like we do. It may be a bit “Newcastley” of me to say that, but it’s true. We now not only demand success but for the way we have backed this club, we deserve it the most. It’s now up to Caixinha and his players to deliver on the park.
