Rangers need to be stand up and counted in Sunday's Old Firm showdown

It’s Old Firm weekend again. It’s time for Rangers to stand up and be counted. We have already proved we can go to Parkhead and match them this season but this time we have to one better. Get the three points and make sure we take a giant leap towards finishing in second spot. There is also the small matter of stopping them winning the title, and I am sure the players will not want that record on their CVs. The fans don’t want to see it happen, that much is certain.

The players need to get the semi-final out of their minds. The whole performance that day stunk to the high heavens, and must not be repeated on Sunday afternoon. Furthermore, I believe the attitude is the one thing that has to change the most. The players have to be together in this, whether they respect the manager or not, and fight for each other on the day. They have to show the bottle, the effort and the willingness to battle and scrap and frankly do anything they possibly can to come away with the win. They simply cannot allow themselves to perform like they did at Hampden.

Morelos and Cummings should both start

From a tactical viewpoint, Graeme Murty will probably go with the 4-2-3-1. Hibs have shown the way in terms of playing against Celtic this season. And that way is to press them as high as you can and do not let Scott Brown or any other of the midfield players settle into a game. We showed at Ibrox that we are more than capable of doing it. I hope Murty & the players are brave enough to do it on Sunday. Watching them sit off Celtic again would be as painful as standing on a plug, to be honest. If we press them and go after them in midfield, and keep it as tight as possible at the back. That’s the only way I believe we can get a result. Sitting in and playing on the break simply will not work.

However, in terms of picking the side, I would be tempted to drop Josh Windass from the team and play Alfredo Morelos in his role. Also, that would allow us to play Jason Cummings up front. Morelos could be the one who sits on Brown and coupled with his overall work rate, I believe this combination is worth using, especially in this match.

Jason Holt’s energy could prove vital in the engine room

In the midfield, Jason Holt would start for me. His willingness to press the ball and get in people’s faces in something we lacked at Hampden. The diminutive midfielder’s work rate and energy could be key if we are to beat them in that area.

Finally, the defence is the area that gives me the fear. I would play anyone ahead of Russell Martin as I believe he’s been a complete failure since his move. However, Murty will start him. I hope he has the game of his life. It’s also a big game for McCrorie. He will have to stand up to the physical challenge of Dembele and co.

Having said that about team selection, the players must win this one for the fans. It wouldn’t be payback for Hampden but it would give us something to smile about in an otherwise disastrous season.
