Steve McManaman exclusive: Sterling the key to England's succeess for do-or-die clash against Iceland

In his latest exclusive column, Steve McManaman says winger Raheem Sterling holds the key for England against Iceland tonight and deserves a second crack at Euro 2016.

Raheem Sterling

I'm hearing that Raheem Sterling will be recalled to the England team for today's game against Iceland and my hope is that he silences the boo-boys and turns on the style.

Raheem had a miserable first game and a half in his Euro 2016 story and it was no surprise when England boss Roy Hodgson whipped him off at half-time against Wales and then dropped him for the Slovakia game. The truth was he had no choice other than to take that action because the kid wasn't producing and the fans in the stadium were turning against him.

Raheem has a negative reputation that goes before him and while some of that is self inflicted, it is not helping him now that he has hit something of a stumbling block in his career.

We all knew Sterling was leaving Liverpool last summer, but the move was a PR disaster for the player and his agent, who offered up ill-advised public comments have given the impression that this is a player in the game for the money as much as the glory.

Going on social media and making snipes and then having an agent in the paper bad mouthing Liverpool and their manager reflected horribly on Raheem and the fans that have booed him ever since that ugly saga.

I know Raheem a little bit an he is a good lad, a quiet lad, but he has struggled to cope with the pressure that goes with being a superstar who has had a massive move to Manchester City. He is only 21, let's not forget, and the whole thing has been a bit too much for him.

When England fans start booing you, it cannot be nice, but I hope he grasps his chance against Iceland, shows his talent and helps his country to a convincing victory in game that should be won with something to spare.

Hodgson appreciates the need for width in his team and as a former winger myself, it has been glaringly obvious that the big problem for England so far has been in wide positions. We need to spread the play, stretch teams a little and offer some kind of threat down the flanks. Raheem Sterling is the man who can do that for England in this tournament.

EURO 2016 FANS' GUIDE - Part 7: Nice

Full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose were England's star men in the first two matches and that highlighted the problem Hodgson needs to solve if his team are to challenge for the Euro 2016 title.

Attacking defenders don't tend to win you trophies, so this is the moment for England's talented forward players to shine.

Harry Kane also looks set for a recall against Iceland and I don't have any problem with that. Okay, he wasn't at his best against Russia and Wales, but the Tottenham striker is a class act and I want him to stay in the box and be patient for chances to come his way.

His eagerness to get into the game saw him drift into wide positions or drop deep too often in the opening too matches, but we need him in the box doing what he does best.

Let's be honest, England are better than Iceland, so this is a great chance for Hodgson's players to get themselves in form ahead of a quarter-final with France in Paris next weekend, when they will need to be firing on all cylinders to get through.

We saw Germany and Belgium hammering second rate opposition on Sunday and that is what we want to see from England in this last-16 game. Give us a proper convincing win, no messing around now.

ICELAND SPOTLIGHT

If they lose this game, Hodgson will get the sack straight away and the England players may as well not come home.

We will never stop talking about the day they lost to Iceland in Nice, but that is not going to happen - I'm backing England to record a big win and march on to Paris for the game against France fuelled with confidence.
