Barkley, Redmond, Vardy and Ozil - key men on the last day of the season
Barkley, Redmond, Vardy and Ozil – key men on the last day of the season

So here we are. The final gameweek of the season and with all the relegation spots confirmed and the title race over, the main areas where there may be fantasy football potential are the Champions League spots, the Golden Boot race and the home teams as historically they do well on the final day. With that said, all the games kick off at 3pm, so who should you look at bringing in and who should you avoid?

Must Haves

Defenders

At the back there are a few teams that have the potential to keep some gameweek 38 clean sheets! To kick things off we have the champions, Chelsea, against Sunderland, which is a game that the Blues will want to put on a show in at home before they lift the trophy. With that said, the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso will be popular choices, not only for their defensive capabilities but also for their attacking ability too. Some may be hesitant after Conte’s mass rotation last week but Azpilicueta is only 90 minutes away from becoming the fourth player in Premier League history to have played every minute of the season for the champions, so he is bound to feature.

Liverpool also have a relatively easy game on paper this week against already relegated Middlesbrough. With Liverpool needing a positive result to confirm their place in the top 4, they won’t be resting on their laurels and Nathaniel Clyne and Simon Mignolet could be good selections this week. Ben Davies has filled in well for the injured Kyle Walker, even picking up the odd assist of late and with a game against Hull, he is our final must have defender of the gameweek.

Midfielders

In the middle of the park, our first must have is Cesc Fabregas. As mentioned, the champions face Sunderland and the Spanish wizard has 5 goals and 13 assists this season, which is incredible considering he has only played the full 90 8 times this season! Our next must have is Christian Eriksen. Although the Danish midfielder didn’t play midweek, he will certainly play this weekend against Hull and will want to show everyone what they were missing! Maybe it could have been 8 or 9 if he had played against Leicester! Our final must have in midfield is Phillipe Coutinho who comes up against Middlesbrough this weekend. Playing their final game of the season at Anfield against already relegated Middlesbrough screams goals, so be sure to get him in your teams!

Forwards

Leicester City may have got thumped against Spurs midweek, however they will want to end their topsy-turvy season on a high with a victory against Bournemouth. They will be looking to their main goal scorer, Jamie Vardy who now has 12 goals and 8 assists this season. Diego Costa was rested last gameweek, much to the annoyance of many fantasy Premier League managers, however it will be unlikely that Conte will rest his key men 2 games in a row and with a final home game against Sunderland, you’d have to expect goals! Gabriel Jesus has been fantastic for Man City when he’s been required. Coming up against Watford this weekend, we expect him to increase his current tally of 6 goals in his 5 Premier League starts!

Must Nots

Defenders

At the back there are quite a few teams that you’d want to avoid. Firstly, we have Sunderland’s defenders; Billy Jones, Jordan Pickford and co., coming up against the champions who will be looking to put on a performance in front of their own fans. Despite some heroic performances from the 30m rated Black Cats defender, we can’t see Sunderland bagging a clean sheet. We then have Hull who come up against Harry Kane and co., who put 6 past Leicester midweek. Therefore, Harry Maguire and Edlin Jakupovic make the must not list this gameweek. Finally, we have Middlesbrough, who face Liverpool at Anfield as the Reds look for that Champions League spots and therefore Victor Valdes and Ben Gibson should also be avoided.

Midfielders

Kamil Grosicki has been terrific for Hull since he joined them and helped them string together a good run of form. However, they have just fallen short and will really struggle against a Spurs side who put 6 past Leicester midweek! Everton’s Ross Barkley looks like he won’t be at Everton next season and although he can present some top fantasy football potential, he is definitely one to avoid this weekend as even if he makes the field, he may just find it hard to pick up points against Arsenal. Our final must not midfielder is West Brom’s Nacer Chadli. Chadli hasn’t produced an offensive return in the last 8 Premier League games and with an away game against Swansea who will be on a high after staying up, he might just want to be avoided.

Forwards

Even though Watford are at home this weekend, it is Troy Deeney who kicks off our must nots for the forwards. Watford have just had the news that they are once again losing their manager, although most are probably used to it by now. That being said, City will want to make sure that their Champions League spot is secure so it won’t be easy for Watford. Manolo Gabbiadini caused heartache for many fantasy managers last gameweek, with him even missing from the spot! This week, although they are at home to Stoke, it may be wise to avoid him and he may even just find himself on the bench this weekend. Our final must not this week is Jermain Defoe. Sunderland are down and they find themselves coming up against the champions at Stamford Bridge on the final gameweek of the season. It’s fair to say they will do well to find the back of the net this weekend.
