Swansea Fan View: City hammering makes for a tough end to the season

Was I the only absolute nutter who put a fiver on Swansea City beating Man City at the Etihad? What was I thinking?!

Great odds aside, there was always that underlying feeling of ‘we could do something special here’. You know, like Swansea teams of the past have achieved.

Some believed that, because Man City had already been crowned champions and had nothing left to play for (and were potentially nursing a few hangovers), the Swans could muster up a surprise victory.

It wasn’t that far-fetched… was it?

Is this Paul Clement in disguise?

As we all know, a hammering issued by the champions isn’t a difficult thing to accept. After all, Spurs suffered a similar fate the week before.

It was the way in which we were beat that grinds the gears. As has been the case all season.

Look back to Swansea’s very first Premier League match. That was against Man City. That was at the Etihad. And that was a 4-0 thrashing. Yet that day, the Swans did the city proud. They showed great club pride and real fight. Bring back Alan Tate.

In Sunday’s match, with a more expensive and established Premier League team, Swansea were brushed aside in a manner we thought had been extinguished by Carlos Carvalhal. Sadly we saw a performance of Paul Clement-esque quality, with no fight, no shape and plenty of ridiculous mistakes.

On the bright side…

Looking on the bright side, no matter how embarrassing a 5-0 defeat is, that loss will not define this season.

Swansea could have lost 10-0 and little would have changed in the table – although we certainly would have benefited more from a plucky draw or confidence-boosting 1-0 defeat going into the final four games.

Instead we will head into the final month dusting ourselves down again, coming off the back of another hammering and miserable performance.

We know Chelsea won’t give us anything and it’ll be a tough ask away to Bournemouth. So it will almost certainly come down to the final two games against Southampton and Stoke, both of whom are struggling for survival too.

Thankfully we are four points ahead of both and if we beat them both, safety will be pretty much guaranteed.

It sounds a simple task: beating two relegation candidates back to back. But after the performance against City on Sunday, you can’t help feel it’ll be a lot tighter than we have been predicting.
