Swansea City Fan View: Summing up this season's disappointing loanees

Saturday saw a fantastic opportunity for Swansea City to take a big step towards securing safety in the Premier League. But it was an opportunity squandered.

West Brom had little to play for – rock bottom, eight-game losing streak, no manager, basically already in the Championship next season. So, of course Swansea approached the match like it was a pre-season friendly, resulting in conceding early in the second half.

Were it not for Tammy Abraham’s goal to salvage a draw, it would have been an embarrassing day. Well, a more embarrassing day than it ended up.

Well done Tammy, but come on – it was about time he scored.

I actually didn’t realise the Chelsea loanee hadn’t scored since October. I know he’s been playing poorly and barely making the team, but that’s an awful record. One goal in 17 games… pretty shocking for a striker touted as the ‘next big thing’.

Sure, we’ve seen glimpses of his talent and he’s chipped in with a few goals here and there this season. But that’s his job. That’s what he’s paid handsomely to do. For his potential, he’s been a big disappointment this season and I’m looking forward to seeing him return to Chelsea.

Sanches returns?

On the topic of loanees, the same goes for Renato Sanches. The midfielder is apparently back with – or at least coming back to – Swansea for the rest of the season, following a length hamstring injury.

But why?

Again, he clearly possesses some talent, but none of it was shown in the few games he played for the Swans under Paul Clement.

You can’t help feel things may have been different had he started the season with Carlos Carvalhal in charge. But you play the hand you are dealt and Sanches played his very poorly indeed.

With six crucial games to go and Sanches heading back to Germany in May, is there any point in trying to get him back playing with the Swans?

Sure, he may come up good, but we have midfielders who can do the job better than he’s shown he can in the Premier League. Survival is paramount – trying to make something work with Sanches isn’t. So why risk it?

Were he a permanent player, fine – give him a few games ahead of next season to get him used to the league again. But he’s not. His attitude has been awful all season, so why should Swansea fans want to see him back in a white shirt?

Finally we come to Andy King who, in fairness, has been pretty good since arriving in January. We haven’t seen much of him, but he’s scored, he’s fought and he’s contributed to the team. That’s what’s needed from a loan player!

If King’s loan was made permanent come the end of the season, I don’t think many would complain.

Make Sanches a permanent player and we’ll have a riot on our hands.
