Tottenham player ratings vs Chelsea: Japhet Tanganga a weak link; Steven Bergwijn promising again

Tottenham were well beaten by Chelsea for the third time this month, going down 2-0 at Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte’s unbeaten start in the Premier League came to an end.

A changed Spurs side, who started with a 4-4-2 system, withstood Chelsea pressure for the opening 45 minutes, and had a first-half goal by Harry Kane disallowed for his shove on Thiago Silva in the build-up.

Within two minutes of the restart, Chelsea took the lead through Hakim Ziyech’s stunning curler, and Silva made 2-0 soon after, heading home Mason Mount’s free-kick.

Hugo Lloris 6

Rooted to the spot by the flight of Ziyech’s brilliant goal. Made a smart save to deny the winger another seconds later.

Japhet Tanganga 4

A weak link, particularly after he was booked. Too easily beaten by Callum Hudson-Odoi in build-up to Ziyech’s goal.

Eric Dier 7

Added presence to Spurs’ back line on a solid return from injury but gave away free-kick for Chelsea’s second goal. Easy to see why he is so valued by Conte.

Davinson Sanchez 5

Bizarrely challenged Silva with his foot rather than head for Chelsea’s second goal. Too easily turned by Romelu Lukaku for a second-half chance.

Ben Davies 5

Back at left back, given a tough examination by the brilliant Ziyech and offered nothing going forward.

Matt Doherty 5

Playing on the right of the midfield four, he made no inroads into Chelsea’s half and lacked the pace to help deal with Hudson-Odoi.

Harry Winks 5

Less comfortable in a two than a three. His corner created a late chance for Kane, well saved by Kepa.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 6

Worked hard but final ball not good enough on the few occasions when he ventured into the Chelsea half.

Ryan Sessegnon 5

Set up Kane’s disallowed goal, which proved Spurs’ best moment. His only other notable foray forward saw his shot go out for a throw-in, while he was guilty of allowing Ziyech to come inside on his left foot for the goal.

Steven Bergwijn 7

Looked full of confidence after his dramatic brace at Leicester was involved in Spurs’ most promising moments. His performance suggests he is a good fit to play up-front when required.

Harry Kane 6

Sharp and unlucky to see a first half goal disallowed for a push on Silva and forced a late save from Kepa. Did his bit defensively.
