Must Haves

Defenders

Marcus Alonso and Chelsea where too much for Middlesbrough on Monday, the Blues’ win confirmed their long-expected relegation. Alonso was having a lot of joy down the left-hand side, bagging a goal in the process, but it could’ve so easily been more. In his last 4 games, he has scored twice, picked up 1 assist and 2 clean sheets. With the Blues just a single win from the title, this could be a big win to ensure the job is complete. Our other pick this week is Phil Jagielka. Everton have picked up just the 3 clean sheets from their last 9 games, with only 1 in their last 7, but they will expect to do better at home against a Watford side who have failed to score on their last 3 outings. Jagielka also has 3 goals and an assist in recent games so could well be involved in attacking play too.

Midfielders

The Chelsea/Everton theme continues in the middle of the park. Eden Hazard or Pedro are our picks from the Blues, with the Belgian picking up 4 goals and an assist from his last 6 and the Spaniard bagging a goal and an assist from his last 3. Since West Brom’s win against Arsenal, they have only managed 2 goals in 6 games, a sign of a team already on their summer break, and this should give these Chelsea boys the opportunity to thrive. Our Everton representative comes in the form of another Belgian, Kevin Mirallas. With the midfielder set to sign a new long-term contract with the club (or may have already signed it by the time you are reading this piece!), he could be in the mood to exploit a defensively flawed Watford side.

Forwards

Our first tip for forwards is our Everton man, Romelu Lukaku. Everton’s visitors, Watford, have conceded 10 goals in their last 5 matches. Given Everton’s home form this year, we expect them to breeze through this fixture and win comfortably. Lukaku arguably hasn’t been prolific lately but his form over the season speaks for itself, he leads the race for the Golden Boot with 24 goals and on average he scores a goal every 129 minutes. Our final Chelsea representative is Brazilian-born, Spanish international, Diego Costa. It’s unclear whether the speculation is true and he’ll be off in the summer but for now, he has hit goal scoring form at a vital time, with 3 goals and an assist in 3 games. As mentioned above, we are expecting a big Chelsea win to seal the title and this man is bound to be amongst it all.

Must Nots

Defenders

A must-haves line-up completely dominated by Chelsea and Everton players can only mean one thing; a must-nots line-up filled by the opposition. To kick us off is Watford man, Daryl Janmaat, who has struggled for game time under manager Walter Mazzarri until lately and hasn’t looked convincing since. The Dutchman has played the full 90 in the last 5 fixtures but has only secured a single clean sheet in that time. We expect Watford to struggle once again on Friday against a stronger Everton side. Our other must-not defender is West Brom’s, Gareth McAuley. He was a popular pick mid-way through the season but with just 1 clean sheet in 11 and no attacking returns in 9, his appeal has dramatically reduced. West Brom have been comfortably safe for some time and we can’t see them being a threat to a rampant Chelsea and their title charge.

Midfielders

Sticking with West Brom, we have Nacer Chadli as a must-not midfielder. With Matt Phillips having an injury stricken end to the season, West Brom are turning to Chadli for something from midfield. However, his inconsistency – no attacking returns in 6 and no goals in 10 – makes him a huge gamble in such a difficult game. As mentioned earlier, West Brom have only managed 2 goals in 6 games, a low return for 540 minutes of football, so definitely a team to avoid. Our other midfield must not is Watford midfielder, Etienne Capoue. 1 goal and 1 assist in 22 games for the Frenchman is not good enough and considering the run-in Watford have (Everton away, Chelsea away and Man City at home), we can’t see this record improving.

Forwards

Up top, we have West Brom and Watford representatives once again. We start with the West Brom front man, Salomon Rondon, who has just the 1 goal and 1 assist in 19 appearances. Rondon may be guaranteed a start considering Hal Robson-Kanu’s recent injury but we don’t expect his attacking tallies to improve when Chelsea visit on Friday night. Our other must not for this week is Watford’s big man Troy Deeney, who has not only been struggling for goals in recent weeks but also game time. Usually a nailed-on starter, Deeney has come off the bench twice in the last 5 games, a game time run that may be affecting his performances as he had scored 6 in 8 games before then. Watford are home and dry when it comes to league survival and against a strong Everton side, we don’t expect too much from the Hornets.
